Swimming & Diving Places Second At Thomas Murphy Invitational

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams placed second at the Thomas Murphy Invitational on Saturday at the Mangione Aquatic Center. The Greyhounds swam past Howard and VMI while falling to Johns Hopkins in the two-day invitational hosted by Loyola.

The Greyhounds defeated Howard, 255-88 on the men's side and 258-97 in women's action. Loyola also defeated VMI by scores of 293-65 (men) and 344-7 (women), while dropping head-to-head competition against Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays swam to a 211.5-136.5 win over Loyola's men and a 209-148 win over the women.

Senior Ryan Reeser, who won the 500-yard freestyle on Friday night, captured the 200-yard freestyle on Saturday and led off two relay winning teams for the Greyhounds. Reeser swam the 200 Free in 1:43.60 for his second individual win of the meet.

Loyola's men's relay teams had a great day in the water with wins in the 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays. The 200 Free team consisting of Ryan Reeser, senior Drew Crampton, sophomore Ernest Verrico and freshman Brad Reeser posted a winning time of 1:26.70 in the event.

The same foursome captured the 400 Free relay in a time of 3:11.82. The 200 Medley team, which won in 1:42.47, was made up of junior Doug Alban, Crampton, freshman Zachary Oster and junior Paul Ebert.

The women had a pair of senior winners on Saturday, including Megan Sterback, who won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Sterback posted a 225.45 on the 1-meter board and a 367.58 in the 3-meter competition. Senior Michelle Ryan also had a win, picking up a first-place finish in the 100 Fly with a time of 2:14.66.

Freshman Melissa White, who won the 200 IM on Friday night, registered a 1:02.01 in the 100-yard backstroke to claim victory on Saturday. White's time was a full second ahead of second place finisher Lisa Qu from Johns Hopkins, who swam a 1:03.61. Loyola's Victoria Kamauff took third in the event with a 1:03.85.

The Greyhound women return to action next Saturday, taking on Mount St. Mary's and Sacred Heart in Emmitsburg, Md. Both the men and women return home for the H2Ounds Invitational the first weekend in December.
