Swimming And Diving Opens MAAC Championships In Third Place

BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior Ryan Reeser won the 500 freestyle event as the Greyhound men's swimming and diving team opened the 2006 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in third place on Thursday evening at the Mangione Aquatic Center.

Rider stands in first place with 230 points after the opening night, while defending champion Marist College is in second place with 199 points and is ahead of the Greyhounds by 69 points.

Reeser recorded a time of 4:35.74 in the 500 freestyle to earn Loyola's lone victory of the opening day. He also helped the Greyhounds finish third in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay.

Sophomore Ian Perazzelli finished in seventh place in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.41, recording an ECAC 'A' qualifying time. Freshman Ernest Verrico also turned in an ECAC 'A' qualifying time by finishing in eighth place with a time of 1:58.92 in the 200 individual medley.

Drew Crampton finished in eighth place in the 50 freestyle by recording a finals time of :22.02, which is an ECAC 'B' qualifying mark.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound women also opened the conference meet in third place behind defending champion Marist and Rider University following the opening session. The Red Foxes have 253 points, holding a 12-point advantage over the Broncs.

Sophomore Megen Hadley finished in third place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:12.00 while freshman Victoria Kamauff finished in fourth place, less than two seconds behind Hadley.

Junior Michelle Ryan earned a time of 2:14.56 in the 200 individual medley, finishing in sixth place and also earning an ECAC 'B' time. Senior Jayme Adams earned fifth place in the 50 freestyle with a time of :24.76, which is an ECAC 'A' time.

Junior Megan Sterback took sixth place in the one-meter diving event by scoring 201.30 points while Marist senior Meghan Duffy earned first place for the second year in a row with a conference and pool record of 254.15 points.

Led by Adams and Ryan, the Greyhounds' 400 medley relay team finished in second place with an ECAC 'A' time of 4:02.60.

The MAAC Championships continue on Friday morning with the second session of preliminaries beginning at 10:00 a.m.
