Swimming And Diving Earns Sweep Of Iona

New Rochelle, N.Y. - Loyola's men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up conference wins in their regular season finale on Sunday, defeating Iona in New Rochelle. The men earned a 136-87 win over the Gaels, while the women posted a 126-116 victory.

The men registered first-place finishes in 11 events, including two relays to pull out front early and stay ahead of their conference foes. The 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Doug Alban, Ernest Verrico, Brad Reeser and Drew Crampton swam to a winning time of 1:40.86 to start the day.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team, where Reeser and Crampton teamed up with Zachary Oster and senior Ryan Reeser, won their race with a time of 1:28.03. Ryan Reeser, who also won the 100-yard freestyle (48.16) and 50-yard freestyle (22.00) events, edged out younger brother Ryan Reeser to win the 100 Free.

Verrico also had a pair of individual wins to go along with his win in the 200 Medley Relay for three total first-place finishes on the day. Verrico won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.13 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.61.

Junior Patrick Hicks picked up wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.95) and 500-yard freestyle (5:02.58) while sophomore Colin McKenna won the 1650 Free in 17:44.18. Other winners included Alban in the 100 Back (57.19) and Tim Hoover in the 100 IM (2:05.80).

The women also gained some confidence heading into the MAAC Championships with their share of first-place finishes and strong performances. Senior diver Megan Sterback won both the 1- and 3-meter events with scores of 217.05 and 224.70 respectively.

Freshman Melissa White was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke, senior Liz Chlebda won the 100-yard breaststroke, and freshman Megan Shovlin led a 1-2-3 Loyola finish in the 1650 Free. Shovlin swam an 18:23.29 to win the event, ahead of teammates Bridgette Schertle and Lindsay Scott.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team captured their race in 1:42.29 with Jennie Zohorsky, Sara Birkenmeier, Emily Benton and Megan Royer.

The Greyhounds are idle next weekend as they prepare for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) swimming and diving championships. The 2007 conference championship meet will take place at Loyola's Mangione Aquatic Center from February 8 through 10.
