Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference wins over Fairfield and Iona to close out the regular season. The Greyhound men defeated Fairfield, 207-109, and Iona, 183.5-126.5; while the women earned a 172-104 victory over Fairfield and a 160-129 win over Iona on Saturday at the Mangione Aquatic Center.

"Getting two wins for the men and women today was a nice way to send off our seniors," said Head Coach Brian Loeffler on Senior Day at Loyola. "We had some people in different events to be sure we had all our options covered for the MAAC Championships. The team responded well by turning in some great times."

The women's team opened the meet with a win in the 400 Medley Relay. Junior Tori Kamauff, freshmen Kim Krzaczek and Caitlin Cassidy, as well as sophomore Melissa White combined for a winning time of 4:05.76 to get the Greyhounds going.

Kamauff also won the 500 Free (5:10.27), and Krzaczek won the 100 Breast (1:08.64) events for the women. Junior Emily Benton posted a pair of individual wins with victories in the 100 Free (55.20) and 200 Free (1:57.73). Benton was also second in the 50 Free, runner-up to teammate Megan Royer, who won in 25.05.

"Emily Benton is swimming great after coming back from studying abroad," said Coach Loeffler. "She will be a tough person to beat come MAACs."

The Loyola women wrapped up the meet the same way they started - winning a relay. Kelly Hurley, Sarah Birkenmeier, Benton and Kamauff teamed up to swim a 3:45.66 in the final event of the afternoon.

In men's competition, the Greyhounds won eight individual events. Led by senior Doug Alban, who won both the 100 Back (55.92) and 200 Back (2:00.55), Loyola also got a big win from senior Ian Perazzelli on Senior Day. Perazzelli won the 1000 Free in 10:25.83.

"Doug Alban finished great today," added Coach Loeffler. "I was especially happy for him to have such strong swims."

Freshman Sam McQuaid took a pair of events himself, winning the 100 Free in 47.83, and the 200 Free in 1:44.44. Junior E.J. Verrico took first in the 100 Fly, while freshmen Ozzy Torres (500 Free) and Jonathan Wertz (200 Fly) captured victories for the Greyhounds.

Freshman Phil Scholz also set American records in the 50 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle events. Scholz, a blind freshman athlete for the Greyhounds, swam record-setting times at the S11 category.

Loyola returns to competition on Thursday February 14 for Day One of the 2008 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Greyhounds host the three-day championship meet at the Mangione Aquatic Center.
