Loyola Men Sweep Three In Swimming & Diving Home Opener

BALTIMORE - Brad Reeser and Colin Chenet each won two individual events as the Loyola men's swimming team defeated Georgetown, Lafayette and Seton Hall in dual-meet action Saturday afternoon at the Mangione Aquatic Center.

The Greyhounds beat Georgetown, 175-113, Lafayette, 208-80, and Seton Hall, 160-131. Loyola's women topped Lafayette, 166-134, but lost to Georgetown, 220-80, and Seton Hall, 182-118.

"Both team's were not at full strength today due to sickness," Head Coach Brian Loeffler said. "I was happy to see the men come away with three wins while the women notched their first victory as well."

Reeser won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.55, edging Seton Hall's Stan Sadovsky by 0.02 seconds. He then took first in the 100 freestyle, swimming a time of 47.70. Fellow Greyhounds swimmer Sam McQuaid was second in the event with a time of 48.17.

Chenet was another multi-event winner for the Greyhounds, touching the wall first in both breaststroke events. He won the 100 breaststroke in 58.19, and then slipped past Seton Hall's Ryan O'Shaughenssy by 0.03 in the 200 breaststroke to win in 2:10.41.

On the women's side, Megan Shovlin won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:35.86. She was locked in a tight race with Seton Hall's Natalie Toczlowski, but Shovlin won at the wall by 0.06 seconds.

Zach Oster earned a victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.17, while Brennan Morris was the winner in the 500 freestyle in 4:37.53.

Ozzy Torres finished first in the 100 butterfly, swimming 50.64.

Torres, McQuaid, Oster and Reeser were victorious in the final race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, winning in 3:12.21.

In the first men's relay of the afternoon, McQuaid, Chenet, Tim Rowe and Reeser took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.71.

Ryan Shovlin was third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:07.08), while Jon Wertz was third in the 200 freestyle (1:47.52).

Morris and McQuaid took second and third, respectively, in the 100 backstroke, swimming times of 52.67 and 52.76. Matt Fralinger finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.33.

Tim Rowe placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.98), while his brother, Jeff, was third in the 50 freestyle (21.83).

Mary Henkels touched the wall in third in the 200 backstroke (2:12.28), and Patrick Murki was second in the same event on the men's side (1:58.63).

Megan Shovlin also finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:13.99, and Carissa McStay was second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.21).

Zach Oster placed third in the men's 200 individual medley (2:00.24).

In the diving events, Lafayette's Kevin Oswalt set two Mangione Aquatic Center records with scores of 288.35 in the 1-meter event and 326.90 in the 3-meter.
