Men's Swimming Leads MAAC Championships After Day One

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland freshman Brennan Morris set a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record in the 500-yard freestyle, helping the Greyhounds take the lead after Day One of competition at the 2010 MAAC Championships.

The Greyhounds scored 209.5 points on the first day. Rider is in second with 105, and Marist holds third with 167.

Morris won the 500 with a time of 4:28.74, shaving over two seconds off the previous record, 4:31.15, set last season by Loyola's Jacob Drannan. Morris also was faster than Drannan's record in Thursday's preliminaries.

Jon Wertz and Patrick Mukri took seventh and eighth, respectively, for Loyola in the same event, swimming times of 4:41.93 and 4:46.73.

The Greyhounds' women were in fourth place with 129 points. Marist leads the women's race with 254, followed by Rider (197.5) and Siena (143).

"We had a good first day of competition," Loyola Head Coach Brian Loeffler said. "I thought that we could've been better in some places, but for the most part we did what we needed to."

Courtney Trivino captured a MAAC title for the Loyola women, swimming 2:05.52 to win the 200-yard individual medley.

For the men, Brad Reeser won the 50-yard freestyle, winning the sprint in 20.85. Ozzy Torres tied for fourth in the race, and Jeffrey Rowe was eighth, with times of 21.11 and 21.37, respectively.

Loyola's men also captured the title in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Rowe, Torres, Sam McQuaid and Reeser were victorious in 1:22.81. The Greyhounds closed the evening with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. McQuaid, Colin Chenet, Torres and Reeser won with a time of 3:20.21.

The Loyola women's 200-yard freestyle relay of Megan Royer, Caitlin Cassidy, Mary Henkels and Lauren Mari took fourth in 1:37.18. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Henkels, Trivino, Cassidy and Mari was fifth in 3:58.32.

Megan Shovlin took fifth in the women's 500-yard freestyle (5:02.97),and Lauren Mari was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.11).

Day two begins with preliminary competition at 10 a.m. on Friday in Loyola's Mangione Aquatic Center.
