BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's men's swimming and diving team won seven of eight events on the second day of competition at the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships Friday, extending its lead from four to 98.5 points.
The Greyhounds are on top of the meet standings with 554.5 points, while Rider is in second with 456. Marist is slotted in third with 381.
Loyola's women sit in fourth place with 319 points, trailing Marist (653), Rider (424.5) and Siena (340).
The competition concludes on Saturday, February 20, with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
Loyola's men kicked off Friday evening with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Sam McQuaid, Colin Chenet, Ozzy Torres and Jeffrey Rowe clocked a time of 1:31.63, edging Saint Peter's, which took second in 1:32.33.
Jacob Drannan then won the 1,000-yard freestyle by over five seconds, finishing in 9:27.73.
Brennan Morris broke his second MAAC record of the meet, shattering the previous best of 3:57.79 in the 400-yard individual medley set last year by Drannan. Morris outpaced the field by over 11 seconds, winning in 3:51.54. Zach Oster took fourth in 4:09.69.
Ozzy Torres won his second-straight 100-yard butterfly title, swimming 49.22 to beat Saint Peter's Michael Ackalitis by almost two seconds. Tim Rowe took seventh (51.76) in the event, edging his brother, Jeffrey, who was eighth (51.94).
Reeser won his second individual event of the meet - he took first in Thursday's 50-yard freestyle - with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle. He finished in 1:40.12, more than a second better than the next finisher. Jon Wertz was sixth in the event, touching the wall in 1:43.72.
Matt Fralinger and Colin Chenet took second and third, respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 56.13 and 56.32. Jeffrey Rowe was sixth in the race in 58.13.
McQuaid was a winner in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.09, and Patrick Mukri took third in the event in 52.52.
The Greyhounds closed the evening with a first-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Drannan, Mukri, Morris and Reeser turned in a time of 6:49.94 to win by almost three seconds.
On the women's side, Courtney Trivino earned her second MAAC title of the year, winning the 400-yard individual medley in 4:27.33, outtouching Rider's Kelly O'Connor who was second in 4:27.61. Trivino also won the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday.
Mary Henkels, Trivino, Caitlin Cassidy and Lauren Mari took fourth with a time of 1:49.08 in the 200-yard medley relay for Loyola, and Megan Shovlin, Nicole Romano, Carissa McStay and Trivino were sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:56.08.
Shovlin claimed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:18.70, while Cassidy and Mari were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 59.45 and 1:00.37.
Henkels took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.29.
