BALTIMORE - Junior Brennan Morris won three individual events to lead the Loyola University Maryland's swimming and diving teams in its season opener with George Mason and Navy on Saturday at the Mangione Pool in the Fitness and Aquatics Center.
George Mason defeated Loyola's men, 172-128, while the Greyhounds fell to Navy, 157-126. On the women's side, Navy won, 208-89.
"While we did not come away with any wins today, we still had some great performances in the pool," head coach Brian Loeffler said. "We will build on this meet as we prepare for Seton Hall and Lafayette at the end of the month."
Morris led the way on the men's side with three victories, winning the 1000-yard freestyle (9:23.45), 500-yard freestyle (5:31.53) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.92), while freshman Joe Wise set a new paralympic record in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing 13th in 2:12.51.
On the women's side, sophomore Caitlin Cronin had an impressive day, earning three top-three finishes. The Kingston, Mass., native finished runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.20) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.85), while she claimed third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.94).
The Greyhounds also had two victories on the women's side, as senior Courtney Trivino won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.85 and the quartet of freshman Erin Calderoni, senior Meghan Barry, sophomore Courtney Chenet and senior Mary Henkels claimed first in the 300-yard free relay in 3:47.15.
Loyola's women's team of sophomore Avery Allen, freshman Melissa Martinex, sophomore Erin Shea and freshman Brianna Keelan also finished top-three in the 300-yard freestyle relay, touching third in 3:51.00.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Loyola swept the top-four places, led by Trivino's performance. Senior Carissa McStay was second, challenging Trivino to the wall, but touching just after her teammate with a time of 2:14.85. Freshman Brianna Keelan was third with a time of 2:20.69 and classmate Ally Rose was fourth at 2:25.53.
For the men, senior Patrick Mukri finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.26 and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.01), while junior Jeffrey Rowe and junior Ryan Shovlin earned runner-up performances. Rowe touched second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.95 and Shovlin was second in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 2:00.43.
The Greyhounds also had third-place finishes from Chenet, sophomore Ben Duva and freshman Maya Olivieri throughout the day. Chenet completed the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:30.34, while Duva touched in 4:58.34 in the 500-yard freestyle. Olivieri clocked in at 1:08.72 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
In relay events, the women's squad of senior Mary Henkels, Olivieri, Chenet and Cronin finished second in the 200-yard medley in 1:49.87, while the men's team of Shovlin, senior Tony Florida, sophomore Zachary Eller and freshman Armand Aquirre touched third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
In diving events, sophomore Elizabeth Mixa scored 208.2 points in the 3-meter diving competition to take second place. In the 1-meter diving event, Mixa finished third with 197.7 points.
Loyola will return to action when it hosts the annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Oct. 22. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
