BALTIMORE - Twenty-two student-athletes at Loyola University Maryland will comprise the first induction class for the school's newly established Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society. Nineteen seniors and three juniors will make up the induction class that recognizes high academic scholarship by student-athletes.

Loyola is the ninth four-year college in the State of Maryland to join Chi Alpha Sigma, thus the campus organization will be designated the Maryland Iota Chapter. More than 250 colleges and universities nationwide have Chi Alpha Sigma representation.

The criteria for nomination as a senior student-athlete to the honor society is a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.4, membership on one of Loyola's 18 varsity athletic teams and an endorsement by the head coach of the team. Juniors must hold a minimum grade-point average of 3.75 or higher to garner nomination.

Loyola's initial membership class will be recognized and formally inducted to the chapter on Monday, April 27, at the annual Athletics Awards Banquet.

Chi Alpha Sigma is a nonprofit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition. Founded in 1996 at DePauw University, the society's goal is to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.
