May 30, 2018 BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's tennis team had a very success and competitive 2017-2018 season with a 13-5 record with impressive wins over Morgan State, George Mason, Mount St. Mary's St. Bonaventure and Howard along with Patriot League victories against Lafayette and Holy Cross.
Freshman Kateri Martin made an immediate positive impact for the Greyhounds in her initial year at Loyola. She became the first Loyola player, male or female, to earn All-Patriot League First Team honors after going 25-6 in singles, 8-2 against Patriot League competition, tying Megan Hahn's 2012-2013 record for the most singles wins by a No. 1 player in a season. Martin teamed with Amanda Lanciano at No. 1 doubles to go 20-9 overall, 5-4 against conference opponents. She won four singles and doubles matches to team with Lanciano for the Loyola Fall Invitational title. She also was a finalist in both singles and doubles at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. Martin was voted the team's Most Valuable Player and was a member of Loyola's Dean's List.
Senior co-captains Lanciano, Nicole Eberle and Julie Clark completed their four-year careers at Loyola on a high note, leading the Greyhounds to their third winning season in four years, 42 wins overall and a quarterfinal berth in the Patriot League Championships against Boston University.
Lanciano competed three years at No. 2 singles and one year at No. 1, amassing an impressive 57 career singles, and 63 career doubels, victories at Loyola. Those marks place her in Loyola's all-time top-10 list for both. She won two Loyola Invitational Championships and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player twice.
Eberle contributed well for the Greyhounds in both singles and doubles throughout her four-year career. She had nine wins at No. 5 singles, raising her career total to 41, and she partnered with Clark and freshman Chloe Boustany for nine doubles wins for a career total of 39. Eberle also set an excellent example for the rest of the team with a 4.0 grade-point average in the spring semester and was a Dean's List honoree as a business major.
Clark was voted the team's Most Dedicated Player for the 2017-18 season. She was a solid performer as a four-year starter in singles and doubles for Loyola, posting 14 triumphs in singles during her final campaign that was third-highest for the Greyhounds. That boosted her career total to 52, complimenting her 41 career doubles wins. Clark was a Dean's List student-athlete majoring in communications.
Sophomore Lin Robertson was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Women's Tennis Team with a 3.859 GPA in her second year. She continued her success on the court at No. 4 singles with the second-most wins on the team (18), adding to her 15 as a freshman. She teamed with freshman Abigail Thornton at No. 2 doubles for an impressive 11-5 record, going 2-4 against Patriot League opponents, and she added five more doubles wins with classmate Alexandria Agee in the fall tournament season. This tandem won three matches at the Loyola Invitational to go with two wins at the Patriot League Kickoff Tournament, advancing to the semifinals. Robertson won a clinching three-set singles match for the Greyhounds to defeat George Mason, 4-3. She is on the Dean's List and will study abroad in Cork, Ireland, during the fall 2018 semester.
Thornton made impressive contributions to the team in her first season of collegiate tennis. She competed well at No. 3 singles with an 11-5 record and teamed with Robertson for an identical mark in doubles action. Thornton was injured in the fall, but she started quickly in the spring with five-straight singles wins and six doubles victories in a row.
Boustany started her academic career with a 4.0 GPA in the fall 2017 semester and was also successful on the courth with 12 singles and nine doubles wins. She teamed with classmate Jenna Granato in the fall tournament season to win the "B" flight consolation bracket at the Bucknell Invitational, along with reaching the Mount St. Mary's consolation finals. Boustany won her first five singles matches at No. 6 and four out of five No. 3 doubles with Eberle to start the spring before an illness cut short her season. She is on the Dean's List while majoring in business.
Agee, a sophomore, along with Granato and fellow freshman Kendall Kuther added substantially to Loyola's accomplishments during the season. Agee won three singles and doubles matches at the Loyola Invitational as she reached the doubles semifinals with Robertson at the Patriot League Fall Kickoff Tournament. Agee is on the Dean's List, majoring in communications.
Granato had a very successful first season with 11 singles wins and six doubles victories. She won four singles matches at the Loyola Fall Invitational and had an impressive singles win versus Howard in dual-match action. Granato is on the Dean's List with a business major.
Kuther set a very high standard in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester and competed well on the court with a 2-2 record in singles, 1-0 against Patriot League foes, and 2-2 in doubles. She is an accounting major on the Dean's List.
Aided by its senior captain leadership, the women's tennis team's youth gained valuable experience in 2017-2018 to propel them into the next year with high hopes. The student-athletes continue their dedication and excellence in the classroom with an outstanding 3.803 team GPA in the fall and a 3.705 GPA in the spring semester.
