United Soccer Coaches Release
BALTIMORE – The United Soccer Coaches national organization released its Team Academic Award recipients on Thursday, with both Loyola University Maryland soccer programs among those recognized.
Loyola was one of 255 schools across all collegiate levels to have both its men's and women's teams honored. To receive the award, programs were required to post a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2018-19 academic year.
The Greyhound women were well above that standard, totaling a 3.69 team GPA last year. A total of 26 team members previously achieved Patriot League Academic Honor Roll status for recording a GPA over 3.0 during the 2018 fall semester. Loyola had similar success in the spring, with 27 over a 3.0, including perfect 4.0 marks for current team members
Sarah Bayer,
Mary Theresa Corcoran,
Sabrina Daglish,
Julia Gray and
Kate Reese.
The Greyhound men registered a 3.20 GPA for the year while earning a second-consecutive Patriot League regular season championship. Fifteen Loyola players were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last fall, and nine were over a 3.50 last spring, including current members
Nico Brown,
Jacob Denison,
David Gunter,
Denir Radoncic and
Brian Saramago.
A total of 989 soccer teams across the country (345 men, 644 women) received the Team Academic Award for 2018-19.
Both Loyola programs are currently near the top of the Patriot League standings through three conference games. The women (5-5-1, 2-0-1 Patriot League) are tied for first with Navy, while the men (3-6, 2-1) are fourth out of 10 teams overall.
The Loyola men return to Ridley at 1 p.m. on Saturday, hosting Lafayette in a conference matchup. The women are on the road at Boston University, with opening kickoff also set for 1 p.m.
