BALTIMORE - The ninth-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team gave up a five-goal run to close out the first half and was unable to make up for it in the second half, as the Greyhounds fell to No. 23 Johns Hopkins, 13-11, in its season opener Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.

Senior Hannah Powers and sophomore Elli Kluegel led the Greyhounds with hat tricks, while sophomore Sam Fiedler added two goals for Loyola. Senior Taylor VanThof and sophomore Livy Rosenzweig each contributed one goal and one assist, and junior Emily Cooper tacked on one goal. Sophomore Emily Beier and senior Lindsey Ehrhardt rounded out the scoring with two and one assist, respectively.

Shelby Harrison led all players with four goals, while Maggie Schneidereith added three goals and one assist for the Blue Jays (2-0 overall).

Behind a pair of goals from Powers and a strike each from Kluegel and VanThof, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-1 advantage by the 22:48 mark. Kluegel scored less than one minute into the season, putting away a pass from VanThof at 29:08. Powers then scored, from Rosenzweig, before the Blue Jays snuck a goal in at 24:14. VanThof and Powers accounted for the 4-1 advantage.

The Blue Jays sandwiched goals around one from Cooper and then added another pair of goals to tie the game at five at 15:55. Loyola wouldn't relinquish to lead though, as Rosenzweig circled the crease and back-handed a flip-shot into the top corner to move the score to 6-5. Fiedler than gave the Greyhounds a two-goal advantage, 7-5, at 10:24.

Johns Hopkins closed out the quarter with five-straight goals though, turning their deficit into a three-goal lead, 10-7.

Kluegel started the second-half scoring less than one minute into play again, finishing a pass from Beier. The Blue Jays answered, but Powers completed her 23rd career hat trick followed by Kluegel, who notched her fifth career hat trick on a man-down goal, to bring Loyola within one, 11-10, with 25:45 to play.

Hopkins kept Loyola from tying the game at 11 and then again at 12 after Feidler's second goal at the 17:57 mark. The Blue Jays closed out the scoring at 15:29, accounting for the 13-11 final.
