BALTIMORE - The 11th-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team punched its ticket to the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon, winning its fourth Patriot League title since joining the League in 2014 and its first since 2016, defeating No. 14 Navy, 21-9, in record-breaking fashion at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Senior
Hannah Powers, the Patriot League Tournament MVP, broke the championships record for goals and points in a tournament, finishing with 12 goals and 18 points in the two games, while sophomore
Livy Rosenzweig – an all-tournament team honoree – broke the tournament's record for assists (10) after tying the tournament's single-game record with six today.
The Greyhounds also netted a tournament-record 41 goals in the two games, while Loyola broke the tournament record for assists in a tournament (26) and single-game assists (17).
In addition to Powers and Rosenzweig, senior goalkeeper
Kady Glynn and sophomore midfielder
Sam Fiedler were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
After scoring a tournament-record eight goals in Thursday's semifinal win over Colgate, Powers scored four more goals and added five assists for a game-high nine points today, while Rosenzweig contributed eight points today, scoring two goals to go with six assists, to break the 100-point mark for a second-consecutive season. The first Greyhound, male or female, to break 100 points last season, finishing with 102, Rosenzweig has bettered her own school record and currently has school-record 106 points this season.
Senior
Emily Cooper led all players with a career-high five goals, while classmate
Taylor VanThof added five points on two goals and three assists today. VanThof also won seven draw controls in the game to move her season total to 101, making her just the second player in Patriot League history to win at least 100 draw controls in three-or-more seasons.
Freshman
Jillian Wilson added two goals for the Greyhounds (15-4 overall), while senior
Amanda Ignacio and sophomore
Elli Kluegel contributed one goal apiece.
Annalise Heyward led Navy (15-4) with three goals, while Kayla Harris had one goal and three assists for four points.
Loyola started slow, but despite facing a 3-1 deficit at the 25:31 mark of the first half, the Greyhounds rattled off an 11-1 run to take a commanding 12-4 lead with one minute to play in the half. Navy then snapped its eight-minute scoreless streak with a goal just 12 seconds before the break.
The Midshipmen tacked on two more goals to start the second half, cutting their deficit to five, at 12-7, but a six-goal run by the Greyhounds saw them pull ahead by 11, 18-7, with 15:53 to play. Navy's Kelly Larkin snapped the streak at 13:16 and Natalie Irwin added a goal for the Mids, but Loyola scored the final three goals of the game to earn the 21-9 victory.
In goal, Glynn stopped eight shots, including six in the first half, for the Greyhounds.
Offensively, Loyola put 21 of its 30 shots into the back of the net and 27 on goal, as the Midshipmen goalkeepers combined to make six saves.
Loyola will learn its NCAA Championships fate Sunday night when the NCAA Selection Show airs at 8 p.m. The show will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
