Wills, Fiedler Help No. 4 Women’s Lacrosse Top No. 9 Penn to Remain Unbeaten

PHILADELPHIA – Emily Wills totaled a season-high eight points, and Sam Fiedler netted her 100th career goal as part of a team-high five strikes in a 19-15 victory for No. 4 Loyola University Maryland at No. 9 Penn on Saturday.

Jillian Wilson added four goals and a career-high 10 draw controls for the Greyhounds (5-0), who bested their fourth ranked opponent in five games while handing the Quakers (4-1) their first loss of the season.

Wills had three goals and five assists to lead the offensive output. Fiedler's milestone strike came on her third goal of the game early in the second half, as she became the 31st player in program history to reach the century mark.

Livy Rosenzweig, who faced off against her older sister Gabby for the first time in college, had six draws, including the 200th of her career, two goals and a pair of assists. Both Rosenzweig's were 2019 IWLCA All-Americans and 2020 Tewaaraton Watch List honorees.

Loyola had to come from behind early on, as the Quakers netted three goals in the first 3:18 of the opening half. Elli Kluegel got the visitors on the scoreboard at the 25:54 mark, and she scored three times during an ensuing 7-1 stretch for the Greyhounds.

Penn responded with the next three to make it a 7-7 contest heading into the intermission, and both sides scored twice in the opening three minutes of the second half.

Fiedler's 100th goal put Loyola up 10-9 and ignited a 4-0 run which included two strikes from Wills and one from Wilson. Penn would pull within 17-14 with 6:10 left, but Fiedler and Caitlyn Gunn responded on the other end to seal the victory.

Wilson and Rosenzweig combined for 16 of Loyola's 19 draw controls, as the Greyhounds finished with a slim 19-17 advantage overall. Wilson's 10 draws were the most by a Loyola player this season, as she easily surpassed her previous career-high of six. Rosenzweig, meanwhile, became just the third Greyhound in program history to reach 200 career draws.

Fiedler has now scored 16 goals in the last three games, helping Loyola complete a 3-0 road trip with victories at No. 4 Florida, No. 19 Penn State and Penn. Wilson reached four goals for a third time in 2020, and Kluegel supplied four goals for a second-consecutive contest.

Shay Clevenger led the defensive effort for Loyola, totaling a career-high six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Larsson matched her career-best with 12 stops in goal while remaining unbeaten in her Greyhound career.

This was the first meeting between the two sides since the 2012 NCAA tournament, and it was the first matchup in the regular season since 2005. Loyola has now won each of the last 15 games, upping its overall series advantage to 17-4.

The Greyhounds make their return to Ridley Athletic Complex next Saturday, opening up Patriot League play with a 12 p.m. tilt against Lehigh.
