Eight Men’s Lacrosse Players Earn All-Patriot League Honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Eight members of the Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team were named to the All-Patriot League teams on Tuesday with six Greyhounds earning first-team honors.

Graduate students Matt Higgins (short-stick defensive midfielder), Ryan McNulty (long-stick midfielder), and Peter Swindell (midfield), seniors Kevin Lindley (attack) and Aidan Olmstead (attack) and junior Cam Wyers (defense) were named to the first team, while senior Bailey Savio (faceoff specialist) and sophomore Evan James (midfield) were tabbed to the second.

McNulty repeated as an All-Patriot League First Team member after earning the honor in 2019. This season, he has continued his play as one of the top poles in the game, contributing in all three phases of the game for the Greyhounds. He enters the Patriot League Championships with 33 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers while also putting up 10 points as a defensive player with four goals and six assists.

Higgins earns his first All-Patriot League recognition this season as he has cemented his status as one of the top short-stick defensive midfielders nationwide. He has played a key role on a defense that ranks ninth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 9.58 goals per game through 12 contests. Higgins has picked up 16 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers while excelling as a one-on-one defender in settled defense.

Swindell is also a newcomer to the All-Patriot League team, earning his first honor this year as he has scored career-highs of 15 goals, 11 assists and 26 points while also picking up 15 ground balls. He is second amongst Patriot League midfielders in both goals and points this season while he also has four extra-man goals for the Greyhounds.

Lindley is poised to become the all-time leading goal scorer at Loyola as he is currently tied for the school record with 151 goals, matching the output of Gary Hanley from 1979-82. Lindley scored three goals on April 29 against then-No. 8 Georgetown to tie Hanley's mark, and he has 35 goals in 12 games this season; his average of 2.92 goals per game is No. 15 in Division I and second this year in the Patriot League. He also tops the Patriot League with a .449 shooting percentage.

Olmstead has recorded his third career 40-point season through 12 games in 2021, logging 19 goals and a team-high 23 assists for 42 points. He is fifth in the Patriot League in assists per game (1.92) and eighth in points per game (3.50). This season, Olmstead has five games with two or more goals and six with multiple assists.

Wyers earns All-Patriot League recognition for the second time after being tabbed a second-team honoree following his freshman season of 2019. This year, he has been one of the best close defenders nationwide, helping Loyola to a top-10 defensive rating. He is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with 18 and is second with 45 ground balls. Wyers has also helped Loyola rank fifth nationally in clearing, as he has six points in transition with a goal and five assists.

Savio continues to be one of the best faceoff specialists around, winning draws at a 55-percent clip this season with 77 ground balls in the 11 games that he's played. He also has scored two goals, both in key situations as they have either tied the game or put Loyola ahead at the time. Savio is second in Loyola history with 324 ground balls, 16 shy of his older brother Graham's record of 340. Bailey Savio also is second all-time with 565 faceoffs won.

James has enjoyed a breakout season for the Greyhounds, playing both on the midfield unit and on the attack line throughout the year. In 11 games played, he is second on the team with 23 goals and third with 32 total points. He came into the season with three career goals, a total he matched in the season's second game when he scored three and had an assist versus Virginia. Overall this year, he's posted four hat tricks and seven multi-goal games.

Loyola opens the Patriot League Championships on Tuesday, May 4, when it hosts the U.S. Naval Academy at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
