No. 7 Women's Lax Holds Off No. 10 Princeton, 16-15, In Battle Of Unbeatens

BALTIMORE - The seventh-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team held off No. 10 Princeton, 16-15, in a battle of top-10 undefeated teams on a rain-soaked Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Loyola (8-0 overall) held a five-goal advantage midway through the third quarter, but Princeton (6-1) used a four-goal run to pull within one, 14-13, with 8:36 to play. Graduate student Elli Kluegel regained a two-goal advantage for the Greyhounds, putting away a no-look pass from sophomore Sydni Black with 5:35 to play, but Princeton once again had an answer, scoring at the 4:29 mark. Senior Jillian Wilson converted a free-position shot with 3:27 to go, giving the Greyhounds some breathing room, but a fast-break transition goal saw the Tigers pull within one for a third time, 16-15, with 1:34 to play.

Graduate student Livy Rosenzweig won the ensuing draw control though, her game-high ninth, and the Greyhounds ran out the clock to secure the victory and remain undefeated on the season.

Freshman Georgia Latch led all players with a personal-best six points, recording her first collegiate hat trick to go with three assists. Wilson also recorded a hat trick and five draw controls, while Black and Kluegel finished with two goals and one assist apiece. Junior Catie Corolla and Rosenzweig each added two goals, freshman Chase Boyle tacked on one goal and one assist, and graduate student Sam Fiedler contributed one goal.

Defensively, seniors Shay Clevenger and Katie Detwiler each caused three turnovers, while Detwiler also won five draw controls. Corolla and Wilson led all field players with three ground balls each.

For the Tigers, Kyla Sears scored four goals, while Sophie Whitway tacked on three goals and eight draw controls.

Princeton scored the first goal of the game, but the Greyhounds responded by scoring seven of the next nine to take a 7-3 advantage into the second quarter. Four-straight Greyhound goals from Wilson, Fiedler, Latch and Rosenzweig gave Loyola a 4-1 advantage at the 10:53 mark and then Wilson and Latch answered Princeton's goal at 6:55 to give the Greyhounds a 6-2 lead with 2:34 to play in the opening quarter. Goals from Princeton and Rosenzweig, respectively, closed out the first quarter.

Princeton chipped away at its deficit in the second quarter, scoring the first two goals of the stanza. Goals from Corolla and Kluegel regained Loyola's four-goal advantage, and Corolla kept the four-goal margin, 10-5, for the Greyhounds with her second goal of the game at the 4:49 mark. The Tigers closed out the half on a three-goal run though to pull within one, 10-9, at the break.

Loyola came out of halftime on fire, with Black, Boyle and Latch combining for four-straight Greyhound goals. Latch scored first, followed by Black. Latch then assisted Boyle before Boyle assisted Black, giving Loyola a 14-9 advantage by the 8:07 mark. That's all Princeton would allow though, as the Tigers closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals to move the score to 14-11.

Another pair of Tiger goals to start the fourth quarter pulled Princeton within one, 14-13, with 8:36 to play. But, that's when Black found Kluegel for a goal at the 5:35 mark to regain a two-goal advantage for Loyola, 15-13. Wilson then answered Princeton's next goal before the Tigers closed out the scoring in the game.

Loyola will remain home for a second-straight game, as it hosts Boston University in the second game of a Loyola lacrosse doubleheader. The men's team will host Army West Point at 1 p.m., followed by the women's game at 4 p.m.
