Second Quarter Run Helps No. 9 Women's Lacrosse Get Past Penn State, 18-9

BALTIMORE - The ninth-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team outscored Penn State 7-2 in the second quarter and never looked back, as the Greyhounds ran away with an 18-9 win at Ridley Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

Graduate student Kaitlyn Larsson frustrated the Nittany Lions (2-2 overall) with an 11-save performance, while nine Greyhounds contributed offensively. Graduate student Sam Fiedler led all players with four goals and five points, while sophomore Sydni Black contributed three goals for Loyola (4-0).

Graduate student Livy Rosenzweig added three points on two goals and one assist, while junior Catie Corolla, freshman Chase Boyle and freshman Georgia Latch all scored twice. Senior Jillian Wilson tacked on one goal and a game-high three assists, and junior Emily Wills finished with one goal and two assists. Graduate student Elli Kluegel rounded out the Greyhounds' scoring with one goal.

Taylor Regan led the Nittany Lions with three goals, while Gretchen Gilmore and Meghan Murray had two each.

Defensively, senior Shay Clevenger and Wilson led all players with four ground balls each, and senior Katie Detwiler caused two turnovers and also won a career-high eight draw controls. In addition to Larsson's 11 saves, freshman Lauren Spence made her collegiate debut and stopped both shots she faced.

The two teams opened the game trading points, as Black answered each of the Nittany Lions' first two goals to keep the score tied, 2-2. Wills' free position goal with 32 seconds left in the first quarter looked to give the Greyhounds an advantage heading into the second quarter, but Penn State found the back of the net with four seconds remaining to keep the game event.

Loyola opened the second quarter with three-straight goals from Rosenzweig, Black and Wilson, respectively, to pull ahead 6-3 by the 8:46 mark, but a pair of Nittany Lion goals cut the Greyhounds' lead to one, 6-5, with 7:09 to play in the first half. That's all Loyola's defense would give up through the rest of the half though as the offense rattled off four-straight goals to send the Greyhounds into the break with a 10-5 advantage. Kluegel and Corolla scored in that run before Boyle netted back-to-back goals, including one as time expired in the first half.

Penn State attempted to mount a comeback early in the second half, as the Nittany Lions scored two of the first three goals, but another four-goal run by the Greyhounds stretched their lead to eight, 15-7, by the end of the third quarter. Corolla scored her second of the day at the 7:45 mark to spark the streak, followed by a goal from Rosenzweig and a pair from Fiedler.

A third-straight goal from Fiedler opened the fourth-quarter scoring and Latch made it six-straight Greyhound goals with a strike at the 8:20 mark to give Loyola a 10-goal advantage, 17-7. Following a Penn State goal, Latch scored her second of the day with 5:33 to play, before the Nittany Lions' goal at 2:15 brought the final score to 18-9.

Loyola will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Georgetown for a 7 p.m. opening draw.
