HAMILTON, N.Y. –
Evan James scored the game's last three goals after Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse trailed, 10-8, with 7:33 left in regulation, and his diving score in overtime lifted the Greyhounds past host Colgate University, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action.
Aidan Olmstead came out of a dodge and threw a pass to James cutting from the left side to the crease. James handled the pass that had pace on it, dove from left to right and scored his fourth goal of the game with 1:55 left on the overtime clock to give the Greyhounds the win.
James and
Adam Poitras both finished with four goals for Loyola, while Olmstead had a goal and four assists.
Colgate took a 10-8 lead when Brian Minicus scored with 7:33 left in regulation, thirty-four seconds after Brendan Jordan broke an 8-8 tie with a goal from left point.
The Raiders got the ball back following Minicus's goal, but Loyola forced a shot clock violation. Colgate goalkeeper Matt Lacombe made a save on the Greyhounds' next shot, but
Scott Middleton caused a turnover on the Colgate clear, and Loyola got the ball back.
Loyola had its first two shots of the possession go off goal, but the Greyhounds retained possession.
Kevin Lindley restarted from behind 'X' with less than seven seconds on the shot clock, and he threw up top to Olmstead. Olmstead got it to
Joey Kamish at the top left, but Kamish had just enough time for one more pass to James on the low left side of the offensive set.
James went low-to-low, releasing the ball just before the shot clock expired to pull Loyola within one, 10-9, at 3:05.
Another shot clock violation by Colgate gave the ball back to Loyola with 1:43 left on the clock, and Loyola cleared to its offensive end and took a timeout.
The Greyhounds ran offense for more 40-plus seconds until
Seth Higgins threaded a high-to-low pass through the Colgate zone to James on the backside pipe. James went one-on-one with Lacombe and scored low to even the game at 10-10.
Loyola got the ball back on the faceoff, but the Greyhounds turned it over, resulting in a Colgate transition run with less than eight seconds. Minicus's shot just before the end of regulation went wide as Loyola goalkeeper Sam Shafter closed down the angle, and the game headed to overtime.
Colgate won the draw to open the extra period, and after a Raiders' timeout, the Greyhounds came out in a zone. Minicus tried to hit Marshall Terres on the backside pipe, but the pass had too much speed, and Colgate turned it over to Loyola just over a minute into overtime.
Olmstead started what would be the game-winning play by dodging hard against Colgate's Donny Gayhardt, and he shouldered off him to gain some room at the top of the offensive box. He them threw to the cutting James for the diving goal.
Loyola built a 3-1 lead when James scored his first of the day, 42 seconds into the second quarter, but Colgate reeled off four in a row to go up 5-4 before
Adam Poitras tallied his second of the first half at 1:36.
The Poitras goal was the first of a 4-0 Loyola run that saw Higgins, Poitras and Olmstead in the third quarter's first six minutes. Olmstead's unassisted goal at the nine-minute mark gave Loyola a 7-5 lead, but the Raiders scored the last three of the quarter to go in front, 8-7, going into the fourth.
Poitras had his fourth of the day at 8:40 to tie the game at 8-8 before goals by Jordan and Minicus put Colgate up, 10-8.
Shafer made 11 saves in goal for the Greyhounds, including a key kick-save on an extra-man opportunity that turned into a Higgins scoring the second half's first goal.
The Greyhounds will wrap up the regular-season on Friday, April 29, when they host Lehigh University at 6:00
p.m. in a CBS Sports Network telecast from Ridley Athletic Complex.
