Defense Propels No. 8 Women's Lax To Eighth-Straight Patriot League Regular Season Title

BALTIMORE - The No. 8 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team shutout Navy through the final three quarters of the game to capture its eighth-straight Patriot League regular season title with a 13-5 win over the Midshipmen Thursday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Greyhounds close out the regular season with a 16-1 overall record, marking their first one-loss regular season since 1975 when they went 8-1-2. Loyola also posted an eighth-straight undefeated record in conference play, stretching its NCAA record for consecutive conference games won to 66-straight.

Graduate student Elli Kluegel led all players with five goals, tying her career high, and classmate Livy Rosenzweig had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists.

Graduate student Sam Fiedler also had multiple points, scoring twice and adding one assist, while senior Jillian Wilson, junior Catie Corolla, sophomore Sydni Black and freshman Georgia Latch had one goal each. Freshman Chase Boyle rounded out the scoring with one assist.

Wilson also led the Greyhounds with four draw controls, while senior Shay Clevenger and Corolla shared a game-high of five ground balls.

In goal for the Greyhounds, graduate student Kaitlyn Larsson turned back 11 shots to post her third double-digit save performance of the season. Through the three shutout quarters, she earned nine saves.

Navy's Reagan Roelofs carried the Midshipmen (13-4 overall, 7-2 Patriot League) through the first quarter, scoring four of their five goals to give Navy a 5-3 advantage after 15 minutes of play. She scored the game's first goal just 31 seconds into play, and Navy followed it up with a second-straight goal for a 2-0 advantage. Rosenzweig then found Kluegel for the Greyhounds' first goal before Black netted a free position attempt to tie the game at 2-2 with 11:03 to play in the first quarter. The Midshipmen regained the lead on Roelof's second goal, but Latch's first score evened the game again at 3-3.

Back-to-back goals from Roelof's regained the two-goal advantage for Navy by the end of the first quarter. That's all Navy would score for the remainder of the game though, as the Greyhounds' defense held the Midshipmen scoreless for the final 49:03.

Rosenzweig had a hand in three of Loyola's four second-quarter goals, as she assisted Fiedler, before Corolla scored on a free position attempt. Rosenzweig then scored the go-ahead goal and assisted Kluegel to send the Greyhounds into the break with a 7-5 advantage.

Rosenzweig and Kluegel connected for a third time to start the second half scoring, as Kluegel scored her third goal for her fifth hat trick of the season. Wilson then scored a man-down free-position goal to stretch Loyola's run to six-straight goals, giving them a 9-5 advantage at the end of the third.

Fourth-quarter goals from Fiedler, Kluegel and Rosenzweig accounted for the final score.
