BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland Athletics celebrated another excellent year of athletic competition and academic success as the Greyhounds continued to achieve high marks in both areas during 2021-2022.
Overall, three Loyola programs – men's soccer, women's lacrosse and men's golf – won Patriot League titles and the Greyhounds realized their top finish in the conference's Presidents' Cup standings since joining the League in 2013-2014.
Loyola finished sixth in both the men's and women's Presidents' Cup standings and sixth overall despite having the second-fewest number of Patriot League sports (17) that count toward the list.
The Greyhounds excelled in the classroom, too, finishing the academic year with a 3.469 cumulative grade-point average. Seventy student-athletes logged a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester with 52 percent earning Dean's List honors during the term, as well.
Loyola opened the 2021-2022 academic year with a plethora of notable team achievements during the fall.
The Greyhounds started that championship season with a terrific showing at the Patriot League Cross Country Championships. The men's squad logged its best team finish at the event since joining the conference, taking seventh as Nathan Galloway (18
th) and Dillon Harding (19
th) became the first men's runners to finish in the top-20 at the meet. In the women's race, Abby Potticary was 16
th to help the team finish eighth, tying for that side's best finish at the Championships.
The men's soccer team had its sixth-straight share of, or outright, Patriot League Regular Season title, and the Greyhounds then advanced to the conference championship game for the first time in school history. A 2-1 victory over American gave Loyola its ninth bid to the NCAA Division I College Cup appearance, and first since 2009, where it played to a 0-0 tie at North Carolina before the Tar Heels advanced on penalty kicks.
On the women's soccer side of the pitch, Loyola had its most-successful Patriot League regular-season to-date, posting 18 points in the conference standings to finish with a 5-1-3 Patriot League record and just two points out of first-place. Bolstered by a defense that featured Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and Academic All-American Paige Sim, the Greyhounds took third in the conference standings and reached the conference quarterfinals.
Loyola's volleyball team wrapped up its campaign with its third-straight bid to the Patriot League Championships. The Greyhounds matched their best conference record since joining the League and went 17-11 overall for the team's highest winning percentage since 2007.
Swimming and diving continued the championship success into the winter season as the men's and women's teams combined for three individual or relay titles at the Patriot League Championships in February. The men's 200 freestyle relay team – Caleb Kelly, Jimmy Hayburn, Henry Mueller and Reid Hussey – became the first Greyhounds relay squad to take a Patriot League crown, winning in a meet record time; Mueller later won the 200 backstroke title, and Lily Mead won the women's team second-ever individual title with a victory in the 100 backstroke. The men's team was fourth, and the women sixth at the Championships. Max Verheyen became the second swimmer in Loyola history to win an ECAC Championship with a title in the 100 breaststroke.
Women's track and field took seventh at the Patriot League Indoor Championships with strong performances in the relays. The 4x400-meter team was fifth while the 4x800-meter squad was sixth and the distance medley relay team took seventh. Olivia Malley later finished fifth at the ECAC Championships in the 500 meters.
The men's and women's basketball teams both finished the season with notable accomplishments as the women had a five-win improvement over the 2020-2021 season with Lex Therien picking up Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors in the process. The men secured a top-six seed in the Patriot League Championships for the first time in school history.
Moving into the spring season, the Greyhounds continued to register a slew of high-water marks for their time in the Patriot League.
The women's tennis team earned the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Championships, the highest Loyola has achieved since joining the conference. The Greyhounds then accomplished another first, advancing to the Patriot League Semifinals for the first time in school history by virtue of a 4-2 win over Bucknell in the quarterfinal round. The men's team boasted two players on the Academic All-Patriot League team while finishing with a solid 9-9 record during the season.
The men's and women's rowing teams were back on the water during their spring championship seasons with the women's varsity four finishing as that side's top-performing boat at the Patriot League Championships. Likewise, the men's varsity four showed a strong finish to the season at the Dad Vails Regatta where the Greyhounds came across the finish line in second place in the second final.
Women's track and field continued its season with good performances throughout the outdoor campaign, logging several performances that rank in the top-10 of Loyola's all-time history. The Greyhounds took seventh at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships with Malley's fifth-place finish in the 800 meters leading the way for the team on an individual level.
For the second-straight year, and the fifth time since joining the Patriot League, the men's golf team won the conference crown to advance to the NCAA Regionals. Carlo Pizzano tied for first in the individual stroke play at the Patriot League tournament to lead the Greyhounds to their 11
th regional appearance in school history. Brandon Berry earned PING/GCAA All-Region honors for the second-straight year, as well.
The men's lacrosse team featured three players who earned All-America honors, led by Payton Rezanka who was a second-team honoree by the USILA, during a season in which the Greyhounds advanced to the Patriot League Semifinals for the seventh-straight season.
Women's lacrosse capped a 2022 season that saw the Greyhounds reach the NCAA Quarterfinals, win a Patriot League Championship and set a school record for wins in a season. Loyola posted its first-ever year with 20 or more wins, going 20-2, including victories over seven teams ranked in the national polls. Katie Detwiler was named to the IWLCA All-America First Team, Livy Rosensweig became the Greyhounds' first-ever four-time All-American, and Jillian Wilson earned All-America honors for the first time.
