Big Day from Black & Wilson Lead Greyhounds Past Penn on Wednesday Evening

Baltimore, Md. -- The Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team scored the first six goals of the game to jump out to an early lead, and itdid not look back on Wednesday evening. Sydni Black led the way for the Greyhounds, thanks again to a career-high eight points in the Greyhounds' 15-7 win over Penn. 

Four different players scored in the big first quarter for the Greyhounds, led by Jillian Wilson and Black who both had two goals, as the Greyhounds led 6-0 at the end of the period. Anna Ruby led the way with two assists while Emily Wills added an assist of her own.

The Quakers scored three unanswered goals, however, in the second quarter and shut out the Greyhounds in that 15-minute frame, giving the Greyhounds led 6-3 at halftime. 

The Greyhounds (3-0 overall) did not waste much time in the third quarter rebuilding their lead, as  Wilson scored with 13:25 left in the third quarter for her third goal of the game. She scored again just under three minutes later, for her fourth goal as the Greyhounds were a player-down to take an 8-3 lead. Black posted her fourth goal of the day on an assist from Georgia Latch with 3:17 left in the third quarter to take an 11-5 lead. With the quarter winding down, Meg Hillman scored with two seconds left in third quarter for her first goal of the day, giving Loyola a 12-5 lead going into the fourth.

Latch scored her second goal of the day with 8:14 left in the game; Black assisted on the goal to give her a career-high four assists and eight points on the day, and Loyola had a 15-5 advantage. 

Loyola's defense once again showed out on Wednesday, as the Greyhounds held the Quakers scoreless during the first quarter. The Greyhounds also held the Quakers to just four shots in the third, as they held them to a season-low 23 shots in the game. 

Wilson had a game-high five goals, while Black added four goals to go along with a career-high four assists for a new career-high eight points. Her previous best came one week prior when she had seven against Towson.

Latch recorded her first hat-trick of the season, while also adding an assist in the game. Hillman had two goals, while Chase Boyle added one. Wills and Ruby had two assists each on the day. 

The Greyhounds controlled the possession, as they led in draw controls 19-6 on the evening. Wilson had a game-high nine draw controls in the game, while Katie Detwiler added six draw controls of her own, Boyle had three, and Black added one. 

Lauren Spence was solid in goal once again for the Greyhounds, making seven saves on the day, while also tallying a team-high three ground balls. 

The Greyhounds now move to 2-0 in ranked games this season. The Greyhounds will be back in action on Saturday, as the Greyhounds will travel to face Penn State at 12:00 PM.
