BALTIMORE –
Katie Detwiler scored in transition to kick off a 4-0 Loyola University Maryland run in the third quarter, and her defense on one of the nation's leading scorers proved to be critical as the Greyhounds held off Stony Brook University, 9-8, to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second year in a row.
Loyola will face top-ranked Northwestern University in a quarterfinal game on Thursday, May 18.
Jillian Wilson gave Loyola (19-2 overall) a 4-3 lead with 27.7 seconds left in the first half, but the Seawolves tied the game with three ticks left on the clock when Clare Levy came down the left side and finished a one-timer off an Ellie Masera feed.
The Greyhounds forced two Stony Brook turnovers to start the second half, the second when
Emily Wills rode back a Seawolves' clear and
Anna Ruby picked up the ground ball.
Ruby was fouled near the top of the offensive box, and she found Detwiler cutting to the goal. Detwiler caught and scored in traffic at 11:27 – her third goal of the season and sixth of her 84-game career – drawing a yellow card with a late hit from a Stony Brook defender.
Detwiler's goal was not her only key role in the game, as the two-time IWLCA All-American defender held Stony Brook's Ellie Masera to only one goal. Masera entered the game with 70 goals and ranked fifth in NCAA Division I with 3.94 per game. With Detwiler leading the defensive effort on her, Masera took eight total shots with only three on cage.
Chase Boyle caught a high-to-low feed from
Sydni Black, turned and scored at 7:33, and the Greyhounds had the first two-goal lead for either team.
The Greyhounds then extended the run to 4-0 with a pair of free-position goals from Black and Boyle, the latter making it 8-4 Loyola with 28 seconds to go in the third quarter.
Kailyn Hart scored unassisted with 9:15 to play in regulation, getting Stony Brook back within three, 8-5, but
Sarah Engle scored her fourth goal of the season and 10
th of her career 69 seconds later, and Loyola was back up by four.
Hart, however, tallied three in a row for Stony Brook (15-4), her third during the stretch coming with just over 17 seconds left to make it a one-goal game.
Wilson won the ensuing draw control to herself, and Loyola called a timeout with five seconds on the clock before Wilson restarted and ran out the clock.
The Greyhounds will make their 12
th all-time appearance in the quarterfinal round and fifth under Head Coach
Jen Adams.
Loyola held a 14-to-6 lead in draw controls, including winning the first six of the game. Black won five, Wilson had four, Detwiler grabbed three and
Georgia Latch picked up two for the Greyhounds. Masera entered the game with 118 draw controls for the Seawolves, but Detwiler marked her on the circle, as well, and she finished with only two.
Boyle's four goals matched Hart for game-high honors and were one off her career-high. Wilson had two goals and two assists, and Black scored the 100
th goal of her career, finishing the game with three points on a goal and two assists. Ruby also had two assists for the Greyhounds.
Lauren Spence made eight saves in goal for the Greyhounds with three coming in the final quarter.
