Philadelphia – The University of Pennsylvania used a 4-1 run in the fourth quarter to jump out to a 11-7 lead, as they went on to win 12-9 over visiting Loyola University Maryland in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday afternoon.
Chase Boyle caught a pass from
Regan Kielmeyer inside and scored with a behind-the-back shot in the second quarter for the Greyhounds (18-3 overall) with 6:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The goal kickstarted a 3-0 Loyola run to close out the first half, as they were tied 4-4 with the eighth seeded Quakers (15-4 overall).
Anna Brandt opened the second half with a goal for Penn, as they would add another goal three minutes later, as they took a 6-4 lead with 9:33 left in the third quarter.
Anna Ruby responded with her second goal of the game, thanks to a
Georgia Latch assist. Brandt would add another goal for Penn, before
Sydni Black scored for Loyola, as the Greyhounds trailed 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Penn opened the quarter with a pair of goals in the first 2:03 of the fourth quarter.
Chase Boyle converted a free position goal, but Penn added another pair of goals, to toa kea 11-7 lead with 5:51 remaining. Loyola attempted a late comeback, but ran out of time, as they lost 12-9.
After their performances today,
Chase Boyle,
Sydni Black, and
Georgia Latch become the third trio of teammates since 2002 to each eclipse the 100-point mark in a season.
The season wraps up for the Greyhounds with their fifth straight trip to the NCAA second round (excluding the 2020 season) and the third-most victories in school history (18). 57 combined wins over the last three years marks the most wins over a three-year stretch in program history.
