ATLANTA –
Joe Hayburn set Patriot League and Loyola University Maryland record on Saturday, closing his trip to the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships with a race in the 200-yard backstroke.
The junior from Bowie, Maryland, swam 1:39.62 to finish 20th in the preliminaries a day after he was 23rd in the 100-yard backstroke.
Saturday's time edges the 2025 Patriot League record of 1:39.79 set by Navy's Ben Irwin at last year's NCAA Championships.
Hayburn's 200- backstroke time broke school record of 1:40.29 that he set at this year's Patriot League Championships. It is the fifth time he has set the school best in the event since his freshman year of 2024.
Hayburn is the second Loyola swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships (Ben Cono), and he is the fourth student-athlete in any sport at the school to compete in the NCAA Championships individually.
