2022 (Graduate Student): Started all 16 games on close defense for the Greyhounds and was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team… Had 29 ground balls and caused 20 turnovers… Posted four ground balls and caused three turnovers at Johns Hopkins… Had two ground balls and a caused turnover in the win over Duke and repeated the same numbers a week later in a win over Bucknell… Caused four turnovers and had two ground balls at Holy Cross… Posted a career-high five caused turnovers and had four ground balls, as well as an assist on a transition goal, against Boston University… Named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll... Graduated in December 2021 with his bachelor's degree in business administration and is pursuing his M.B.A. in management.
2021 (Senior): Started all 16 games on close defense for the Greyhounds… Led the team with 22 caused turnovers and had 39 ground balls… Caused three turnovers and had a ground ball at Richmond and followed that with three ground balls and two caused turnovers against Virginia… Picked up five ground balls versus Utah… Caused three turnovers against Bucknell… Credited with six ground balls and two caused turnovers in the regular-season home game against Navy… Had three caused turnovers and four ground balls at Lafayette… Caused two turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls against Denver in the NCAA First Round... Named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
2020 (Junior): Made his Loyola debut against Rutgers and played in four games... Finished with two ground balls.
2019 (Sophomore at Loyola): Missed the season with an injury and received a medical hardship waiver to retain the year of eligibility.
2018 (Freshman at Mercer University): Named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team following his first season as a collegian... Also named to the 2017-2018 SoCon Academic Honor Roll… Finished sixth overall in NCAA Division 1 in Caused Turnovers… Set Mercer program record for caused turnovers (31) in one season… Ranked third on team in ground balls with 28… Also had four goals and two assists during the season… College Crosse named him to its 2018 All-Freshman Team.
Before College: Graduated from South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, where he was a varsity lacrosse player four years and also played basketball… Earned USLacrosse All American Honors in 2017… Recognized as a Washington Post All-Met First Team defensemen as a senior after scoring 26 goals, dishing out six assists, grabbing 130 ground balls and causing 86 turnovers... As a junior, also selected to the Washington Post All-Met Second Team when he scored 19 goals, recorded 6 assists, grabbed 145 ground balls and caused 77 turnovers… Recognized as the Liberty Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year as both a senior and junior… Earned Virginia First Team All-State and All-Region honors as a senior and junior… Helped lead the Seahawks to back-to-back undefeated records in Liberty Conference play and conference tournament champions as a junior and senior, advancing the team to both the regional and state tournament… Named to the All-Conference Team as a sophomore when he scored eight goals to go with four assists, picked up 85 ground balls and had 56 caused turnovers… Also selected as All-District as a freshman after scoring six goals, adding four assists, grabbing 15 ground balls and creating 13 caused turnovers… As a long-stick midfielder, led team, Liberty Conference, Region and State in caused turnovers and ground balls as a junior and senior… Was also an offensive threat in transition, finishing his four seasons with 59 goals and 20 assists… Played club lacrosse for Team Maryland Lacrosse in Frederick, Maryland.
Personal: Matthew Ingram Hughes… Son of Lisa and Kelly… Has an older Brother, John… Matthew and older brother John played together on the varsity lacrosse and basketball teams… Both swam together for ten years for the Reston Swim League… A certified swim instructor, Matt supported the Special Olympics as an aquatic volunteer… He participated for the Readers are Leaders program, mentoring elementary school children, and also served as a basketball camp counselor.
