Women's Tennis Edges St. Joe's, 4-3

Oct. 10, 2003

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Loyola's women's tennis team lost the doubles point, but came back to win four of six singles matches en route to defeating Saint Joseph's by a score of 4-3 Thursday afternoon on the Hawks' campus.

Saint Joseph's took a one-point lead after winning the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches heading in to singles competition, as Loyola only managed a win at No. 2 doubles where Gina Turturiello and Amy Nitch teamed to triumph 9-7.

The Greyhounds refused to surrender however as Nos. 2 through 6 singles players Kaitlin Russo (6-0, 6-3), Turturiello (7-6, 6-0), Nitch (6-2, 6-2), and Claire Najour won in straight sets, with Najour coming back from three games down in both of her sets to win 6-4, 7-5, and clinch the match for Loyola as night began to fall on the Philadelphia city-line.

Loyola improves to 2-0 this year with the win.

The Greyhounds return to action Sunday, October 12th at 10 a.m. in the opener of what will be a women's-men's doubleheader against Niagara and both Loyola squads' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener at the Butler Courts.
