Women's Basketball Tops Niagara, 60-49

BALTIMORE, MD - Behind a double-double from sophomore Katie Scherle, the Loyola College women's basketball team topped Niagara, 60-49, Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds improve to 8-7 with the win and 4-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while Niagara falls to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the league.

After a steady first half, with a 28-19 Greyhound lead, Niagara turned on the heat. Within 10 minutes the Purple Eagles whittled the as-much as 11-point Loyola lead down with three point shooting. Niagara tied and then took the lead with two three pointers before gaining a five point lead with the two-point basket on the following possession. With a 46-41 Niagara lead at 9:07, the Greyhounds regained control and went on a 19-3 run over the last nine minutes of play. 10 of Loyola's 19 points in that run came from free-throws.

Niagara committed 15 personal fouls in the second half alone; giving Loyola 22 chances at the charity stripe. The Greyhounds also dominated the boards in the second half to contain Niagara's scoring chances. Overall, Loyola pulled down 51 boards to Niagara's 29.

Scherle led the game with 22 points and 13 boards for her third double-double of the season. Loyola distributed scoring evenly with Jill Henn adding eight points and Krystle Harrington and Brittany Dunn adding seven points, Lauren Troupe at six and Meghan Wood with five. Lindsay Cobb and Harrington added three and four assists, respectively with Cobb and Jill Glessner each tallied four steals. Dunn pulled down a career-high eight rebounds to follow Scherle in that column.

For Niagara, Ann Mimm led with 13 points and six rebounds. She was followed by Eva Cunningham with 11 and Jessica Kemp with 10. Both Mimm and Cunningham posted four steals.

Loyola is on the road for the next four games, first stopping at Saint Peter's on Friday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is set for 7:30.
