Women's Soccer Claims MAAC Title, Defeats Rider, 2-0

Fairfield, Conn. - The Loyola College women's soccer team won its fifth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title with a 2-0 win over Rider Sunday afternoon. With that victory, Loyola earns an automatic bid to its fifth consecutive NCAA College Cup. The Greyhounds also extend their win streak to 13 games while posting a 16-3-0 record this season. The Broncs end the 2004 season with a 12-7-2 record.

After a scoreless first half, Courtney Arikian started things off for the Greyhounds, netting a shot off a pass from Tyhira Glenn with 18:32 left in the game. Loyola then took a 2-0 lead as Ali Andrzejewski scored on a rebound from five yards out on the right side off a initial shot by Glenn at the 17:26 mark.

The Greyhounds posted a 22-2 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in corner kicks.

Loyola goalkeeper Kate Gilfillan recorded her 10th shutout of the season with the win. Rider's Kim Carter and Hannah Harris combined for seven saves between the pipes for the Broncs.

Lindsay Tracey was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, joining teammates Andrzejewski, Arikian, Gilfillan, Lisa Jaffa and Carolyn Kennington on the All-Tournament Team. Rider was represented by Leah Craig, Andrea Giuliani and Tami Coyle on the squad. Iona's Leanne Sudol and Siena's Corry Silon rounded out the members of the All-Tournament Team.

With the victory, the 2004 Loyola women's soccer squad continues to break school records. The Greyhounds have now broken the mark for most victories in a season with 16 and the longest unbeaten streak at 13-0-0.

The Greyhounds will now wait for tomorrow's NCAA Selection Show (ESPN News 4:30 pm) for their draw in the 2004 NCAA College Cup which begins Friday, Nov. 12.
