Daytona Beach, Fla. - Will Shriver shot a 74 as the men's golf team moved up two spots to finish 12th at the Daytona Beach College Classic on Tuesday afternoon at Victoria Hills Golf Club. Shriver led a furious Loyola charge that resulted in the third-best round of the day, giving the `Hounds a three-round team total of 949.
After posting rounds of 329 and 317 to start the tournament, Loyola battled back with only four golfers in the lineup. After freshman Nick Brassill withdrew on Day One, Loyola's foursome knew its scores would count and all four golfers scored in the 70's in Tuesday's rally.
Tommy Villani was Loyola's top finisher, scoring a three-round total of 234 thanks to Tuesday's 76. Shriver finished the tournament with a 237 while Chris Derby shot a 238 after a final round 77. David Atkinson also finished strong, posting a 76 for a three-round total of 240.
All four golfers registered their best round of the tournament on Tuesday as Loyola jumped over host Stetson (950) and South Carolina State (970) in the standings. Florida Atlantic won the tournament with an 891 while Jacksonville took runner-up honors with an 898.
The Loyola men's golf team is finished with its fall competition and will begin the spring portion of the schedule at the Fort Lauderdale Invitational on March 10-11, 2005.
