Jan. 8, 2005

Box Score

New Rochelle N.Y. - Junior Krystle Harrington recorded her first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 71-59 win over Iona Saturday at the Mulcahy Center. The Greyhounds improve to 3-9 overall and 2-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Gaels fall to 3-9 and 1-2.

With the score tied at 4-4 at 16:44, Loyola went on a 9-1 run to claim a 13-5 lead at 13:44 in the first half. Iona countered with a run of its own, 6-0 to get closer 15-11 at 10:53. After two straight Loyola baskets, Iona's Meg Abele drilled a three that seemed to give Iona momentum and cut the lead to 17-14 at 8:31. But the Greyhounds defense but a stop to that and built up a 30-20 lead over the next few minutes. Loyola used a five-point play after Harrington hit a three while Meghan Wood was fouled under the basket and went 2-for-2 from the line to set the 30-20 mark. The Greyhounds maintained that lead by shooting 6-for-6 from the free-throw line while Iona's Tiara Headen hit 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to cut the lead to 25-34 in the closing seconds.

In the second half, Brittany Dunn put Loyola up 42-29 when she made a defensive play and went coast-to-coast for the basket. Iona cut that lead to as much as six at 6:51 behind two-straight baskets by Headen before Meghan Wood scored and started a quick 5-0 for a 69-49 score with 5:32 remaining. Headen got the Gaels within eight with a three to follow Loyola's run but the game never got any closer than that as the Greyhounds were forced to the line eight times over the final minute and a half. Lauren Troupe nailed a basket as the clock wore down for the 71-59 final.

Harrington led all scorers and was followed by Scherle with 15 points. Ebony Toliver and Dunn each added nine points for a new career-high for both. Scherle and Dunn were second on the boards with six each while Dunn also added three assists and three steals.

For Iona, Tiara Headen scored 14 points off the bench while Regan Pettijohn completed a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena on Monday, January 10 to host Siena at 7:00.
