Women's Basketball Falls to Columbia in Close Season Opener

New York, N.Y. - In its 2006-07 season opener, the Loyola College women's basketball team fell to Columbia 75-69. The Greyhounds fall to 0-1 on the season and travel to Drexel Sunday. The Lions improve to 1-0. Loyola was led by senior Jill Glessner's 19 points while Brooke Carey led Columbia with 15.

The game was slow to start with neither team leading by more than a basket until a 6-0 run by Loyola gave the `Hounds a 12-8 advantage at 13:13. The run included two free-throws by Glessner and back-to-back baskets by Meghan Wood. The Lions then put together a 12-0 run to take a 20-12 lead at 8:52. The Greyhounds fought back, outscoring Columbia 13-6 for the remainder of the half. Brittany Dunn hit a three and added a three-point play while Tynisha Davis also added a three and Glessner scored two baskets in the run. The Lions led by one, 26-25 at the half.

To start the second half, the teams each scored twice for a 30-29 score before an 8-0 run by Columbia to lead 38-29. The Lions led by as much as 15, 56-41, at the 10 minute mark when the Greyhounds began to chip away. With 3:31 left to play and the score set at 67-58, Loyola pushed the offensive effort. The Greyhounds outscored the Lions 13-4 over the next three minutes to get within two, 71-69. The Lions ended the game going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line for the 75-69 final.

Glessner led the game with 19 points while adding five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Junior Meghan Wood scored 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds in her return to the floor after sitting out last season. Davis scored 12 to round out the `Hounds in double digits.

Brooke Carey led the five Columbia players in double-figures with 15. Megan Griffith added 14. Chelsea Frazier recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Carfora and Danielle Browne rounded out the Lions top scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Greyhounds remain on the road, traveling to Drexel on Sunday for a 1:00 tip.
