Maryland Slips Past Men's Soccer, 1-0

Sept. 26, 2006

Box Score

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's soccer team put together a solid defensive effort against No. 3 Maryland on Tuesday night, but a Terrapin goal in the 60th minute was enough to propel the defending national champions to a 1-0 victory at Ludwig Field.

The Greyhounds played an aggressive, yet defensive-minded match against the Terps. With freshman Milos Kocic in goal, Loyola effectively limited Maryland's chances, playing a scoreless first half of soccer.

Maryland was able to break the tie in the 60th minute when Maurice Edu redirected a header from Drew Yates. The Greyhounds, who had their best counterattack opportunities whistled as offsides calls, had a great chance to equalize when Camilo Correa sent a cross into the box late in the match. Unfortunately for the 'Hounds, they weren't able to convert and fell by the one-goal margin.

Kokic finished the game with four saves, while as a team Loyola finished with five. The freshman goalie has started and played in two games this season - both coming against teams ranked in the nation's Top 20.

The Greyhounds, now 1-7-1 overall, begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play this Saturday at Rider. Loyola, picked second in the MAAC preseason poll, has won six of the last seven regular season MAAC titles.
