Women's Tennis Shuts Out Coppin In Home Opener

Sept. 20, 2007

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over cross-town foe Coppin State in Thursday's home opener at the Butler Courts. The Greyhounds, who won the doubles point, swept through singles play to begin the year with a 1-0 record.

Sophomore Kerri Swan and freshman Joy Johnson answered a Loyola defeat in No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 victory at No. 2. Senior co-captains Meaghan McKenna and Mallory Tarca picked up the default win at No. 3 to give Loyola a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

No. 1 singles player Caitlyn Day won at No. 1 singles to get the Greyhounds started, while Johnson, McKenna and Stephanie Dunn all won their singles matches in straight sets.

The match of the day, however, came at No. 2 singles where Swan battled to a two-hour victory after dropping the first set 2-6. Swan won 6-4 in the second set and then took the tie-breaker (10-1) to complete the Greyhound sweep.

Loyola returns to action on Sunday at St. Francis (PA). The Greyhounds will take on the Red Flash in a men's-women's doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
