Golfers Claim Fifth Place at D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate

Oct. 13, 2008

Norman, Ill. - Senior Michael Mulieri shot a 73 on Monday at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate to finish tied for ninth in individual play, and the Greyhounds fired a final-round 298 to claim fifth place among 15 teams at the Weibring Golf Club in Norman, Ill.

A day after all of its scorers scored 74 or better to claim a tie for fourth place after 36 holes, Loyola could not maintain that same consistency. The Greyhounds' final-round 298 followed rounds of 287 and 289 on Sunday.

"We got a little ahead of ourselves today, but it was a great learning experience for the younger players," Head Coach Tom Beidleman said. "We need to do a better job of getting focused on Day Two."

Loyola shot a three-round total of 874 for the tournament, going 287-289-298.

Freshman Jay Mulieri led the way for the Greyhounds with a two-over 72. His brother, Michael Mulieri, was one stroke behind him with a 73 after shooting 69-72 Sunday. Michael finished with a three-round total of 214; Jay came in 44th overall after going 77-75 the first day.

Sophomore Alex Redfearn shot a 75 to finish as the second-lowest Greyhound for the tournament. He finished tied for 26th overall after firing 72-73 Sunday.

Two shots behind him at 222 was freshman Ryan McCarthy. He hit a 78 on the final day after carding rounds of 74-70 Sunday.

Freshman Patrick McCormick rounded out the Greyhounds' scoring with a final-round 79. He finished for a tie in 45th place after putting up 72-74 Sunday.

The tournament's top prize went to the University of Illinois, which carded a three-day 831. Scott Langley of the Fighting Illini took home top individual honors, shooting 64-67-70 for a total of 201. In team play, Illinois State took runner-up honors, while Western Illinois took third, and SIU-Edwardsville earned fourth.

The Greyhounds will make a cross-country trip Friday to play in this weekend's Santa Clara Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif.
