Greyhounds Take Early Lead at MAAC Golf Championships

April 25, 2008

Orlando, Fla. - Senior Matt Bassler shot an opening round 69 to lead Loyola's first-place effort on Day One of the MAAC Championships at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Orlando, Fla. Overall the Greyhounds posted a 299 in Friday's opening round and lead second-place Fairfield by one stroke with two days and two round of golf yet to play.

"Matt Bassler played very well," said Loyola golf coach Tom Beidleman. "As a team we didn't get off to a great start, but we finished well. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow."

Junior Michael Mulieri added a 74, while both senior Chris Derby and junior Mike O'Keefe posted rounds of 78. Freshman Alex Redfearn, playing in his first MAAC Championship, scored a 79 to round out the Loyola scorers.

The Greyhounds are the top seed at this weekend's championships. Loyola has won three of the last five MAAC titles and has boasted three of the last five medalists at the championships. The tournament continues on Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday at Disney.
