Women's Tennis Opens Season at Towson 4+1 Invitational

TOWSON, Md. - The Loyola women's tennis team scored a 5-0 victory over Saint Joseph's in the second match of the Towson 4+1 Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a very successful weekend because a lot of people go an opportunity to play at different levels," Head Coach Rick McClure said. "Some of our freshmen got their feet wet and had their first experience at the college level. I think these matches are going to help us learn where we are at early in the year and how we are going to grow this fall."

In addition to the victory over Saint Joseph's, Loyola lost, 3-2, to Mount St. Mary's and to Georgetown, 4-1.

The Greyhounds won all four singles matches against Saint Joseph's, while Lane Maloney and Jackie Lionetta defaeated Courtney Scarpellbette and Alexis Arons, 6-1, 6-0, in a doubles match.

Rachel Janasek made her collegiate debut in the No. 1 spot for Loyola, defeating Saint Joseph's Jennifer Kedzieski, 1-6, 7-5 (10-7).

Joy Johnson defeated Laura Metz, 6-4, 3-6 (10-5), in the No. 2 spot, and Lauren Cassle was a straight-set winner, 6-4, 6-3, against Krysta Contino in the third position. Judy Lite topped Krysta Contino, 6-4, 6-3, in the fourth spot to complete the sweep.

Earlier in the day, Loyola lost its first match of the Invitational, 3-2, to Mount St. Mary's. The match began on Friday afternoon, but it was held over until today due to Friday's rain.

Dana Verona was the Greyhounds' winner in singles, winning her match 7-5, 2-6 (7-1). Rachel Bergeron and Liz Black then won their doubles match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, for Loyola's other point.

In the day's final match, Loyola lost, 4-1, to Georgetown.

Johnson picked up the Greyhound's victory at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 0-6 (10-8), victory over Maxi Thiell.

Janasek fell to Michelle Brown, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 1 singles, and Cassle lost to Harnson, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Verona was defeated by Alex Sebia, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 4 singles, and Maloney and Lite lost in doubles to Aileen Shea and Carolina Kuehn, 6-1, 6-0.

The Greyhounds continue their fall schedule next weekend at the Bucknell Invitational.
