Loyola Tennis Defeats Coppin State To Wrap Up Season

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men defeated Coppin State 6-1 on Wednesday to finish the season with an 11-6 dual-match record.

The team swept the doubles point with a win at No. 2 behind junior co-captains Matt McDaniel and Tim Koch. The duo defeated their opponents with an 8-0 final score. Sophomores Dan D'Agostino and Jamie Russo won by default and No. 3 to grab the doubles point, while freshmen Keyan Sanai and J. Pierce Norton fell 6-8 in a touch match at the one position.

Three Loyola singles players won in straight sets, starting with Sanai at No. 1 (7-5), (6-2). Koch won at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0) and sophomore Rob Mattison swept the No. 5 match (6-0, 6-0). Norton played a three-set match at No. 2 singles, falling 3-6 in the first, flipping it 6-3 with a win in the second, and finally winning the match in a 10-2 tiebreaker victory. D'Agostino won by default at No. 6 singles. McDaniel fell to Coppin State's Quincy Darke at the NO. 3 position (2-6, 1-6).

On the women's side, the Greyhounds shut out the Eagles 7-0 to increase their dual-match overall record to 14-6.

Loyola won two-of-three doubles matches to take the point. Freshmen Liz Black and Rachel Bergeron won 8-0 at the No. 2 spot and another team of freshmen Ashleigh Torchiana and Elisha Connell won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. The top doubles team of sophomore Joy Johnson and freshman Dana Verona fell 6-8.

The young Greyhound women's team continued to collect victories in singles action, with all but one winning in straight sets. Johnson played a three-set match at No. 2 singles starting 6-2, 4-6 to move to a 10-pt tiebreaker game. She closed out the match with an 11-9 victory to take the match.

Freshman Rachel Janasek returned to her No. 1 singles position and won 6-2, 6-2. No. 3 Black followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory, as did No. 4 Bergeron (6-0, 6-0), No. 5 Torchiana (6-1, 6-2) and No. 6 Connell (6-0, 6-3).
