Women's Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to George Washington

Sept. 30, 2009

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, Md. - Against a tough George Washington team, Loyola staged two fierce rallies to come from behind and extend sets two and three. But clutch hitting by the Colonials locked up the match in the end and George Washington (10-5) took the win 3-0 (15-25, 25-27, 24-26) in the last non-conference action of the season.

Nina Camaioni posted her third straight double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Katie Dircks had a strong performance with seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. Dircks stopped a couple key balls from becoming hard kills in Loyola's two rallies.

The Colonials downed Loyola 25-15 in the first set but failed to take the same commanding lead in the second. After taking a 4-1 lead, Loyola came back to tie the set 10 times.

With the set all tied up at 22-22, George Washington called a timeout. The Greyhounds came back to take the lead on a Dircks kill. Loyola was finally able to break through with a lead when Dircks hit a ball that floated right through two George Washington blockers' fingertips. Janet Pressler than extended the lead to 24-22 by drilling a kill down the line.

After Leah Hill put down a kill for the Colonials, Camaioni hit a ball out of bounds, tying the game once again. Camaioni hit another kill to make up for it, but then hit a ball into the antenna for the last tie of the game.

Hill came back from another timeout with a kill and Taylor Koncelik hit a ball into the antenna to end the set.

The third set played out much like the second, but Loyola overcame a greater deficit and tied the game up late at 20-20. Koncelik served the ball right into Katie Zulandt to give the Greyhounds a slim 23-22 lead, but George Washington finished it off in the end.

With non-conference play over, the Greyhounds go back on the road for more Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Action. This weekend Loyola will travel up to Saint Peter's and Manhattan.
