Men's Soccer Plays Quinnipiac To 0-0 Draw

Sept. 7, 2009

Final Stats

HAMDEN, Conn. - Despite taking a combined 42 shots, neither the Loyola men's soccer team, nor Quinnipiac could find the net, as the teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Monday afternoon in a non-conference Labor Day contest.

Kyle Wittman made three saves in goal for Loyola and recorded his first collegiate clean sheet against the host Bobcats (0-0-2).

The Greyhounds (1-1-1) put six shots on goal, but Quinnipiac's Frederick Hall made saves on each of them.

Quinnipiac outshot Loyola, 25-17, but only two of the Bobcats' attempts were on net.

"Quinnipiac is a very good regional opponent, having been in the top four in the (North Atlantic) Region the past several years," Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick said. "It was a hard fought game where both teams had opportunities."

Philip Surprise and Dominic Adams each took five shots for Quinnipiac, while Jamie Darvill recorded the same number for Loyola.

"We showed some encouraging signs that we can build on," Mettrick said. "Quinnipiac is a difficult place to play, but overall there are a lot of positives to take out of the game. Pleased to see that we got a shutout, but we need to sharpen up more."

After Loyola taken in the first 10 minutes of golden-goal overtime, Loyola recorded four in the final 10, and the Bobcats took three.

Loyola's had a flurry of chances in the second overtime that nearly led to a goal. In the 108th minute, Darvill had a header blocked by a Quinnipiac defender, but Glenn Leitch collected the loose ball only to see his header go wide.

Less than 30 seconds later, Eddie Dines put a shot on goal for Loyola, but Hall was there to make the save and preserve the tie.

The Greyhounds again had an opportunity in the 109th minute when senior back Tennant McVea got his head on a Kevin Curran corner kick, but the shot was high and over the crossbar.

Danny Ankrah nearly ended the game with just over 30 seconds left in the first overtime. His shot from just under 25 yards out went over the goalkeeper but off the crossbar.

The Greyhounds continue action on the road next weekend when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y., for the Mayor's Cup at Hartwick. Loyola takes on Syracuse at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 11, before facing the host Hawks at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 13.
