Swimming & Diving Teams Wrap Day One Of H2ounds Invitational

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's swimming team earned three victories and the women's swimming and diving team finished in the top three of four events as the men's team leads Iona, Marist and Saint Peter's after the first day of the H2ounds Invitational at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatic Center on Friday. The women's team trails Marist.

The Loyola women's swimming and diving team produced several strong finishes on Friday, including some of the school's all-time best.

Freshman diver Elizabeth Mixa locked up second place in the one-meter event with a score of 209.50, marking the fourth-best finish in program history. Mixa finished 1.25 points behind Marist's Chelaine Eliazar.

The Greyhounds also finished in second in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay. Courtney Chenet, Sam Berizzi, Erin Shea and Caitlin Cronin turned in a time of 7:52.53 to edge Iona and Marist and record the fifth-fastest result all-time at Loyola.

Loyola made one more inroad into the record books in the women's 400-yard medley relay en route to a third-place finish. The entry of Mary Henkels, Chenet, Caitlin Cassidy and Cronin touched the wall at 4:01.43 for the school's fifth-fastest time ever.

Freshman diver Michael Brown also took third place in the three-meter event with a score of 234.20, marking the fourth-best score in Loyola men's diving history.

The Loyola men's team earned several victories on Friday, as well.

Sophomore Brennan Morris won the men's 500-meter freestyle with a time of 4:30.49, almost five seconds ahead of second-place finisher Justin Grigull of Iona. Freshman Scott Heil finished third with a time of 4:41.40 and freshman Benjamin Duva took fifth with a 4:49.17 effort.

The men's swimming team took the day's second event with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet of Sam McQuaid, Colin Chenet, Ozzy Torres and Scott Heil turned in a time of 3:23.92 to top entries from Saint Peter's (3:28.27) and Iona (3:29.72). The time not only netted Loyola the victory, but also marked the fourth-fastest time in school history.

The Greyhounds also took fourth place, with Patrick Mukri, Matthew Fralinger, Tim Rowe and Jeff Rowe combining for a 3:30.83 result.

Loyola's final victory of Friday came in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay. Mukri, Jacob Dannan, Morris and Heil clocked in at 6:56.86 to finish first ahead of Marist by more than 10 seconds.

The Greyhounds also took third in the event, as Tony Florida, Ryan Shovlin, Johnathan Wertz and Ryan Leonard finished less than two-tenths of a second behind the Red Foxes.

Loyola returns to the pool tomorrow for the final day of the H2ounds Invitational. The meet begins at 10 a.m.
