LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Loyola University Maryland freshman setter Lauren Andersen posted 38 assists and helped three Greyhound hitters post nine or more kills, as Loyola swept host Rider University, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21, on Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
The 38 assists for Andersen were her season three-set best. Faye Lukas led Loyola (6-14 overall, 3-4 MAAC) with 12 kills, while Tina Catanach had 11 and 13 digs. Jac Bullock posted nine kills, and Elena Frac had six.
Defensively, the Greyhounds had a solid match, as well, posting a season-best 76 digs in just three sets. Janet Pressler led all players with 23 digs, and Casey O'Hanlon added 10.
The Broncs (4-16, 2-6) took an early first-set lead, going up 12-9 on a Jaclyn Webber kill, but Bullock and Lukas each had two kills in the next four points, as Bullock's second pulled the Greyhounds in front, 13-12.
The lead would see-saw between the teams, with Rider going up again by three, 17-14, on a Webber ace, but Loyola would rally again.
This time, the Greyhounds scored three in a row, tying the set on an Andersen ace. Rider went back up, 18-17, when Bridget Sheerin had one of her match-high 13 kills, but Lukas tied it again, and Catanach gave the Greyhounds a one-point advantage with a kill.
Rider would immediately tie it at 19-19 with a Rachel Jensen kill, but Frac had a Loyola kill, and Pressler served an ace, giving Loyola a two-point cushion it would eventually extend to five before winning the set, 25-20.
The Greyhounds are back in action next weekend when they travel to Western New York for a pair of games. They will take on Niagara at 2 o'clock on Saturday, followed by a date on Sunday at the same time with Canisius.
