Loyola Concludes Season With 1-0 Loss To Manhattan

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team's comeback fell short Friday afternoon as the Greyhounds dropped a 1-0 contest to Manhattan in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 MAAC Men's Soccer Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney.

With the loss, Loyola concludes the year with a 10-6-2 record, while Manhattan (4-14-1) advances to the semifinals of the MAAC Championship.

The Greyhounds looked to take a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when sophomore Vegard Vinje played a ball out to sophomore Stephen Dooley, who fired a shot at Manhattan's goalkeeper. The Jaspers' George Ellis made a diving save on the play, but was unable to control the ball as it ricocheted to freshman Connor Thompson. Thompson's shot went just left of the goal though.

Manhattan answered with an opportunity in the 22nd minute when the Greyhounds were called for a foul just right of the goal. Carlo Giachino took the free kick for the Jaspers, but Loyola's wall got a piece of the ball, sending it just high of the goal.

The Jaspers were able to convert in the 35th minute though, when Trevor Chiduku redirected a cross from Tommy Amos, sending it past graduate senior goalkeeper Kyle Wittmanfor the game's first goal.

Loyola looked for its equalizer in the 41st minute when sophomore Cameron Coppoladrew a foul inside the box, but Ellis saved his fifth shot of the half on the Greyhounds' penalty kick, keeping Loyola off the board and giving Manhattan a 1-0 halftime advantage.

The Greyhounds had a chance to tie the game again in the 47th minute, but Ellis punched Thompson's shot from the left side just over the cross bar. The Jaspers then sent a shot off the crossbar in the 64th minute.

Loyola had an opportunity in the 76th minute when junior Kevin Curran played a corner to sophomore Geaton Caltabiano, who sent a cross in front of the goal. Sophomore Jamie Libbymet the ball, but Ellis saved his header to keep the Greyhounds off the board.

Dooley then blocked a clear attempt of Ellis' in the 87th minute, but his shot from down low went just wide, meeting the side of the net.

Loyola concludes the year with its 27th 10-win season in the last 31 years. The Greyhounds also posted a 5-3-1 MAAC record and a 6-2-1 record at home.
