BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2011 spring schedules with victories over the weekend.

The Greyhounds opened the weekend with a pair of dual matches Saturday evening against Morgan State. The matches were played indoors at the Hilton Baltimore Tennis and Racquet Club.

Loyola's men edged the Bears, 4-3, while the women swept their match, 7-0. On Sunday, the men traveled to Annapolis, Md., where they lost, 6-1, to the U.S. Naval Academy.

On the men's side Saturday night, the match came down to the last flight to be played, the No. 6 singles contest between Loyola's Connor Lisco and Morgan State's James Tash.

Tash won the first set, 7-5, but Lisco rallied to win the second, 6-2, and force a deciding set three. Tash went up, 3-2, in the third, but Lisco scored the last four points to clinch the victory for the Greyhounds.

In other singles action, Loyola's Keyan Sanai defeated Eric Ward, 6-4, 6-2, and Bobby Gorczakowski topped Morgan State's Duwane Thomas, 6-3, 6-2.

Loyola swept the doubles point with three wins. J. Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler combined to beat Kevon Charles and Eric Ward, 9-8 (8-6), in No. 1 doubles. Sanai and Dan D'Agostino beat Dimitry Chekhlatyy and Aaron Benjamin, 8-5 in No. 2, and Gorczakowski and Jamie Russo defeated Tash and Thomas, 8-5.

On the women's side, Rachel Janasek led off the singles action with a 6-1, 6-2, victory over the Bears' Alexis McCoy in the top flight. Sabrina Fedele then defeated Pola Olczak, 6-2, 6-0.

Scarlett Hoy, Joy Johnson and Judy Lite were all straight sets winners, 6-0, 6-0, and Tiffany Ash won by default.

In doubles action, Janasek and Johnson teamed to defeat McCoy and Olczak, 8-4, while Hoy and Lite beat Tanya Hughes and Diana Carline, 8-1. Ash and Andie Keyser-Baker were winners at No. 3 doubles by default.

At Navy on Sunday, Gorczakowski was the lone winner for the men. He defeated Anderson Walk, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 4 singles action.

Sanai lost to Marcus Rebersak, 6-1, 6-1, and Norton fell to Nick Gutsche, 7-5, 6-1. Matt Richmond edged Kevin Zingler, 7-5, 7-5, and Heyward Drayton beat D'Agostino, 6-1, 6-3, while Mike Eisenberg slipped past Lisco, 6-3, 6-4.

Nick Berger and Owen Bullard just beat Norton and Zingler, 9-7, in No. 1 doubles, while Jeremy New and Drayton topped Sanai and D'Agostino, 8-2. Gorczakowski and Russo lost, 8-4, to Chris Kenney and Eisenberg.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Tuesday when they travel across Baltimore to Coppin State to take on the Eagles at 3:15 p.m.
