FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland women's tennis team won three singles matches, but Marist College claimed a key point in doubles action, and the Red Foxes edged the Greyhounds, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday morning at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Wednesday's loss ends the Greyhounds season with an 11-6 overall record, marking the 25th-straight season the women's team has won 10 or more dual matches in a season.
Judy Lite and Scarlett Hoy defeated Joana Sun and Marielle Campbell, 8-4, in the No. 2 singles match, but Marist's No. 1 doubles team of Erin McCarthy and Kelsey Raynor defeated Loyola's Rachel Janasek and Joy Johnson, 8-4.
The No. 3 doubles match would decide the critical point, and Marist's Jeannie Lukin and Retta Byron edged Loyola's Tiffany Ash and Andie Keyser-Baker, 9-7.
Janasek delivered the Greyhounds a 7-5, 6-1, victory over Raynor in No. 1 singles, and Lite topped Kayle O'Donovan, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot. Ash then recovered from a 2-6 first-set loss to beat Lukin, 6-2, 6-1 in the final two sets at No. 6 singles.
Marist, however, clinched the match by winning the other three singles matches. McCarthy topped Sabrina Fedele, 6-2, 6-4, Sun beat Hoy, 6-2, 6-1,and Campbell defeated Johnson, 7-6 (4), 6-0.
The Loyola men also faced their coutnerparts from Marist on Wednesday, but the Red Foxes dealt the Greyhounds a 7-0 defeat.
Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler posted a 9-7 victory for Loyola over Rhys Hobbs and Nicolas Pisecky at No. 1 doubles, but it would be the lone match Loyola picked up.
Keyan Sanai and Dan D'Agostino were defeated, 8-1, by Matt Himmelsbach and Joris Van Eck, and Bobby Gorczakowski and Jamie Russo lost, 8-0, to Lorenzo Rossi and Will Rezenek, at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.
Rossi topped Sanai, 7-5, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, and Norton lost, 6-3, 6-1, to Pisecky one flight behind.
Himmelsbach defeated Zingler, 6-3, 6-0, in No. 3 singles, and Gorczakowski lost, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 4 slot. D'Agostino fell, 6-2, 6-1, to Renzek, at No. 5, and Connor Lisco was beaten by Marcus von Nordheim, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Additionally, the MAAC announced the 2011 Men's and Women's Tennis All-Academic Teams. Loyola and Marist led the conference, both placing 12 members on the teams. Following are the Greyhounds' honorees:
