April 9, 2011

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's women's tennis team won three of six singles matches, but Villanova University earned the doubles point, and the Wildcats came away with a 4-3 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon.

Sabrina Fedele defeated Allison Sollberg in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and Joy Johnson topped Anne Cognetti, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot. Judy Lite then picked up the Greyhounds' third point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Kristin Gobberg.

Villanova picked up singles wins in the No. 1 - Mikelle Mancini beat Rachel Janasek, 6-3, 6-3 - and No. 6 positions - Wesleigh Donadio defeated Tifany Ash, 6-4, 6-2.

The match came down to the No. 3 singles where Alexandra Harding edged Loyola's Scarlett Hoy, 7-6 (3) in the first set only to see Hoy come back for a 6-3 second-set win. Harding, however, won the match for Villanova with a 6-0 victory in the deciding third set.

Hoy and Lite teamed in No. 2 doubles to defeat Sollberg and Harding, 9-8 (6), but Villanova picked up wins in the other two slots.

Mancini and Gobberg defeated Janasek and Johnson, 8-3, and Cognetti and Donadio topped Ash and Andie Keyser-Baker, 9-7.

The Loyola women are back in action on Monday when they host Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Greyhounds' men take on Villanova on Sunday at 11 o'clock.
