Caltabiano Leads Loyola To Season-Opening Win At Adelphi

Aug. 27, 2011

Final Stats

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Sophomore transfer Geaton Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mount St. Joseph's) scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by sophomore Stephen Dooley (Portstewart, Northern Ireland/Loreto College Coleraine), in the 55th minute of Loyola University Maryland's men's soccer season opener Saturday, leading the Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory at Adelphi. With the win, the Greyhounds begin the season with a victory for the 44th time in program history, while the Panthers fall to 0-1 on the young season.

"I am very pleased with the team's performance today," head coach Mark Mettrick said. "Adelphi is coming off back-to-back conference championships and has a very strong soccer tradition. We showed a lot of heart and fight out there and we were able to get contributions from a lot of different players. Ultimately, I am very pleased with the players pulling together to get a great win away from home."

Caltabiano and Dooley led the Greyhounds with two shots each, while junior Gary Weisbaum (Baltimore, Md./Pikesville), sophomore Cameron Coppola (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) and sophomore Vegard Vinje (Norway/Ulleran Videregående Skole) each notched one.

Fifth-year senior Kyle Wittman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) opened the season strong in goal, making four saves - all in the second half - to earn his 16th career shut out.

After a scoreless opening half, Vinje laid off a pass to a streaking Dooley, who went down the line and put a cross into the six-yard box. Caltabiano - who's father was a member of Loyola's 1976 NCAA Division II National Championship team - then came running in and crushed a shot into the near post to put Loyola on the board first, at the 55:41 mark.

Five Greyhounds made their debuts for Loyola today: sophomores Caltabiano, Coppola and Vinje, in addition to freshman Joseph Cahalan (Reisterstown, Md./Gilman School) and Connor Thompson (Swindon, England/Cirencester Academy).

Adelphi, the 2009 and 2010 Atlantic Soccer Conference champions, led the way in shots (11-7) and corners (7-3), while Loyola earned four saves, compared to the Panthers' two.

Loyola will stay on the road for its next two games. The Greyhounds will head to William & Mary on Saturday, Sept. 3, before traveling to Navy on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
