Loyola Faced Wales National Team In International Exhibition

Feb. 13, 2012

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team hosted the Wales National Team in an international exhibition at Ridley Athletic Complex Monday night. The Greyhounds defeated the Welsh, 13-2.

Freshman Annie Thomas (Bel Air, Md.) quickly got the game going, scoring on a pass from junior Cass Cursaro (Adelaide, Australia) just after the opening draw. Sophomore Marlee Paton (Seaholme, Australia) then made the score 4-0 with three-straight goals. Paton finished the contest with a game-high four goals.

Freshman Molly Hulseman (Winnetka, Ill.) tacked on another goal for the Greyhounds before the Welsh were able to take their first shot. Senior Kellye Gallagher (Ridley, Pa.) scooped up the rebounded shot though and sent it back the other way, in which Cursaro converted into a goal off a free position shot.

Hulseman added a second score for Loyola, before Wales was able to find the back of the net, bringing the score to 7-1.

Cursaro and Thomas would each score again for the Greyhounds before halftime, giving Loyola a 9-1 advantage at the break.

Cursaro scored the first goal of the second half, assisted by Paton, before Paton returned the favor and assisted Cursaro for the half's third goal. Junior Joanna Dalton (Queenstown, Md.) notched a goal of her own between the two scores.

The Welsh owned the next goal, before freshman Kara Burke (Timonium, Md.) brought the final score to 13-2.

Loyola outshot Wales 32-7 throughout the contest.

The Wales team, which played Delaware earlier today, is currently on a tour of the United States as it put together a competitive schedule against collegiate competition in hopes of preparing and developing internationally, in preparation for the 2013 World Cup.

At the 2009 World Cup in Prague, the Welsh went 4-0 in pool play and went on to finish sixth overall, falling to Ireland in the fifth-place finals game.

The Greyhounds will open their season on Saturday, heading to Charlottesville to face No. 11/10 Virginia. Opening draw is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
