Lite, Ash Win Deciding Matches To Top Siena

BALTIMORE - With the Loyola University Maryland women's tennis teams down, 3-2, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action against Siena College, Judy Lite and Tiffany Ash each rallied to win their singles matches, giving the Greyhounds a 4-3 league win on Saturday afternoon.

The Loyola men also were victorious on Saturday, defeating Siena, 6-1.

The Saints' women captured the doubles point, sweeping Loyola as Jasleen Sandhu and Carly Holloway beat Rachel Janasek and Sabrina Fedele, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles, and Cassandra Braz and Jessica Macaluso edged Scarlett Hoy and Lite, 9-7 at the second slot. Nicole Ross and Brittany Filip then got past Ash and Jackie Lionetta, 8-6, giving Siena a 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles action, the Greyhounds got a pair of points back when Janasek defeated Sandhu in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, and Fedele downed Filip at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1.

Siena evened the match, 2-2, with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, win by Holloway over Hoy at No. 2 singles, and the Saints pulled ahead, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, with a No. 6 win by Elora Benfer over Lionetta.

Trailing by a point, Lite rallied after dropping the first set, 6-7 (4), to beat Macaluso, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 singles.

Crill won the first set against Ash, 3-6, but the Loyola No. 5 player came back for a 6-4 win in the second. After Lite's victory, the third set of the match was played with the team score tied, 3-3. Ash prevailed, winning 6-4, to clinch the match for the Greyhounds.

Janasek's singles win was her 22nd of the season, setting a school record for victories at No. 1 singles, breaking the previous mark set by Nancy Turnblacer.

In men's action, Loyola captured the doubles' point by winning the No. 2 and 3 matches. Keyan Sanai and Bobby Gorczakowski teamed to defeat Jarret Siwiec and Eric Summanaru, 8-2, and Connor Lisco and Patrick Glaessner beat Dylan Roberts and Vikaran Kadaba, 8-2. Siena claimed the No. 1 match, as Peter Collins and Alex Burbine beat Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler, 8-3.

Sanai got past Collins, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and Norton beat Roberts, 6-2, 1-6, 10-3, at No. 2.

Gorczakowski beat Siwiec, 6-1, 7-6 (0) at No. 3, and Lisco downed Matthew Funiciello, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Kunkel closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Summanaru.
