Greyhound Women Sweep Drexel, Lafayette And Seton Hall

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's swimming and diving team won three events en route to sweeping Drexel University, Seton Hall, and Lafayette College in the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

In a close battle with Drexel, Loyola's women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Brianna Kellan, Erin Shea, Tara Mulligan and Erin Calderoni anchored the squad to a first-place finish, beating the Dragons to the wall by nearly 14-tenths of a second. The Greyhounds clocked a winning-time of 3:35.64.

Freshman Marie Clarkson, Mulligan, Erin Shea and Caitlin Cronin finished third in the women's 200-medley relay. Loyola touched the wall with a time of 1:48.75, just under a second behind Seton Hall.

A trio of Greyhounds swept the 1,000 free, led by freshman Becca Meyers with a time of 10:36.34. Fellow classmate Courtney Kenyon took second (10:55.91), while senior Sam Berizzi rounded out the trio in 10: 56.31.

Meyers went on to place second in the 500 free (5:15.10), just ahead of Shea, who took third with a time of 5:16.93. The senior competed in her fourth and final event of the afternoon, taking second in the 100 butterfly (59.28).

Sophomore Lizzie McKenna also won an event, finishing first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.89. She also took third overall in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.60.

Cronin was the third and final first-place finisher, helping Loyola to its sweep of the team victory. The senior swept the 100 free with a time of 52.56, and took second in the 50 free (24.43). In her longest individual event of the afternoon, Cronin took second in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:11.63.

Elle Mixa had a strong performance, finishing second (221.55) and third (225.65), on the one meter and three-meter dive, respectively.

Other top finishers included Brianna Keelan in the 200 free (third, 1:58.19), Courtney Kenyon in the 100 breaststroke (third, 1:08.90), Kaitlin Richter in the 200 butterfly (third, 2:13.77), and Theresa McKallen in the 200 breast (third, 2:29.87).

On the men's side, Loyola tied Lafayette, 150-150, but were edged out by Seton Hall and Drexel .

Junior Rulan Kopunek swept the 50 free (21.34) and 100 free (47.33). The junior also guided the 400 free relay team of Madison Hardimon, Nigel Hunter, and Julien Brice to a second-place finish, with a time of 3:11.27.

Individually, Hunter tied for second with Zachary Eller in the 50 free. The duo finished behind Kopunek and helped the Greyhounds sweep the event, touching the wall at 21.79.

Bryan Bedacht and Stephen Tonaszuck finished second and third, respectively, in the 1000 free. Becacht finished in 10:05.00, while Tonaszuck recorded a time of 10:06.80.

In the one-meter dive, Noel Theroux took second (255.40), while teammate Michael Brown finished third in the both the one (255.35) and three meter (238.05) events.

Loyola will return to action when it hosts Johns Hopkins, Marywood and Saint Francis, Pa., in the annual two-day Thomas Murphy Invitational. Events will take place Friday, Nov. 1, beginning at 5 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m.
