Dual Match Split at Mount St. Mary's

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men and women's tennis teams split matches against Mount St. Mary's Wednesday, as the men fell, 6-1, and the women winning, 5-2.

The men's squad came up short against the Mountaineers Wednesday afternoon, only pulling off one singles victory as well as a doubles match. Senior captain Bobby Gorczakowski and freshman Connor Pietrak started the match off with a close 8-6 doubles victory over Mountaineers' Matt Blake and Taylor Place. Teammates Harrison Kunkel and Connor Lisco, along with Jordan Kuchta and Greg Olesnycky, were paired up in the #2 and #3 slots for doubles, but fell, 8-3 and 8-4, respectively.

With the early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point, Mount St. Mary's continued their great play into singles, taking five of the six matches. A close first set for Gorczakowski proved to be a great match at the #1 singles, but Mountaineers' Blake showed redemption from the doubles match pulling off the victory, 7-6 (3), 6-2. At #4 singles, Greyhounds' Jordan Kuchta put up a fight against Austin Blake of Mount St. Mary's, falling 6-3, 6-4.

Junior Connor Lisco claimed the singles victory for the Greyhounds, as he took down Mike Zabetakis, 6-2, 6-3.

With the lose, the men's record moves to 9-5 for the season.

The women's squad came out firing against the Mountaineers, taking the match, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon. Freshmen Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes started the day off for the Greyhounds with a stiffling 8-2 victory at #1 doubles, setting the momentum for Loyola early in the match. Teammates Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott sealed the early 1-0 lead with an 8-2 victory as well in the #2 doubles match over Mountaineers' Renee Deane and Carly Landini.

Moving into singles, Hahn kept the momentum for the Greyhounds in the #1 singles match with a close win over Kelly Conroy, 7-5, 6-3. Loyola continued their great play into the next two singles matches as Morgus and Hughes both knocked off Mount St. Mary's with 6-2, 6-1 wins, apeice. Ott also took down Mountaineers' Liz Rossi at #5 singles in a close second set, winning 6-1, 7-5.

The win improves the women's record to 11-3 for the season.

Both squads continue their road trip as they go into MAAC play the next two matches. First stop is Saturday in Loudonville, New York as the Greyhounds take on Siena College. Start time is set for 10 a.m.
